Re: Does the cause for craving is feeling ?

Also, does an arahant still have feelings ? Looking at the Arrow Sutta my understanding is there are still physical feelings for the Arahant, but that mental feelings have ceased. "In the same way, when touched with a feeling of pain, the well-instructed disciple of the noble ones does not sorrow, ...

Re: Noting throughout the day

Could anyone offer some advice on noting practice in daily life? I’m curious if as a practice one should start out using it in formal sitting and walking sessions and gradually trying to keep up the noting with other tasks as mindfulness/concentration becomes stronger? I find that on the cushion al...

Re: Losing friendships

Hello, My friends like to go partying, drinking, going to festivals, chasing their dreams of succes, enjoying a whole lot of entertainment. And I'm totally opposite of what they're doing. I spend most of my hours in meditation, read meditation manuals, go to dhamma groups and to retreats. I think m...

Re: Is Dependent Origination about Nama,Rupa or Nama-Rupa?

In these discussions that Lord budda used a logic ( sequence as well as circular logic) to explain the process of samsara in sensual spheres should not be forgotten. If we try to break down this form of logic , then the meaning will not surface. Could you elaborate on what you mean by "circular log...

Re: The original meaning of "viññāṇa"

Thanks, an interesting discussion, though somewhat inconclusive. It occurred to me In the suttas consciousness arises in dependence upon sense-base and sense-object, eg eye and visible form - does this mean that vinnana depends upon a duality? "The Blessed One said: "And what is the origination of ...

Re: The original meaning of "viññāṇa"

Am I right in thinking that the "vi" of "vinnana" means "two", and denotes a duality? I think it does have a dual association to it, subject object dichotomy. The end of consciousness would also be the end of vinnana. This is big departure from Advaita and the Hindu model. They don't acknowledge th...

OK, here's your example: https://suttacentral.net/sn12.61/en/sujato#5.2--5.3 ‘When this exists, that is; due to the arising of this, that arises. ‘iti imasmiṃ sati idaṃ hoti, imassuppādā idaṃ uppajjati; When this doesn’t exist, that is not; due to the cessation of this, that ceases. Re: Is Dependent Origination about Nama,Rupa or Nama-Rupa?

I continue to struggle to comprehend why folks view the descriptions of birth, aging and death in DO as "physical". Simply because they are described in physical terms in the suttas, specifically in SN12.2 and MN9. Perhaps you don't want to accept this because it undermines your personal interpreta...

Re: Is Dependent Origination about Nama,Rupa or Nama-Rupa?

There are various ways of understanding the conditionality involved in DO, but I think the two most important ones are those described in the suttas, ie snychronous ( "While this nidana is present, then that nidana is present..." ) and sequential ( "When this nidana arises, then that nidana arises....

Re: Is Dependent Origination about Nama,Rupa or Nama-Rupa?

There are, obviously, different interpretations of dependent origination, but this diagram perhaps suggests that we should not think of it a step-by-step process. There are various ways of understanding the conditionality involved in DO, but I think the two most important ones are those described i...

Retro is, of course presenting his interpretation, which is influenced by Vens Nanananda and Nanavira. But do note that in the sutta you quoted one of the perversions is: 'Self' with regard to not-self is a perversion of perception, a perversion of mind, a perversion of view. So, if we accept the i...

Re: Bundles of reeds simile.

Thus, all the five aggregates are actually sankharas, whether they are assigned to the sankhara aggregate or one of the other four. I think you are muddying the water by conflating these two quite distinct uses of "sankhara". Again it's a case of square pegs and round holes, trying to force one mea...
