I am looking for Abhidhamma Pitaka since I have only managed to find Abhidhamma Sangahata and half of Abhidhamma Pitaka translated to english.

Abhidhamma Piṭaka in english
I apologize for asking, but I am not able to find any translation of Abhidhamma Piṭaka in English. I was able to find introductions and commentaries to the Abhidhamma Piṭaka which is totally fine, but I was thinking to actually read the real thing as some point. Do you know if there is one or if the...

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
Since I have studied also advaita philosophy. advaita was influenced by yogacara; however, the main difference is that "the consciousness" in yogacara is not atman (Vasubandhu outlines this) while "the consciousness" in advaita is atman/brahman (soul/God). So in summary, the cons...

Re: An account of Christian meditation
actually, meditation within Christianity is nothing new.... In the west before Christianity, there was meditation, but the meditation was mantra meditation and visual meditation (like you create an image within the mind) (maybe there were more techniques, but we simple don't know). During the beginn...

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
I would not differentiate like that because the Theravada Abhidhamma belongs to Theravada doctrine like Sarvastivada Abhidhamma belongs to Sarvastivada doctrine. Theravada is not merely the suttas but includes interpretation of suttas. Here I am not sure to be honest, I have read in introduction to...

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
This is quite simple. First you have the suttas and then arise commentaries based on these suttas. So you are equating Theravada with the Commentaries rather than with the Pali suttas. This might be a reasonable hypothesis. However, since Yogacara teaches a 7th & 8th consciousness and teaches e...

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
Buddhist schools of philosophy are concerned with epistemology and ontology which do not contradict buddha teachings while buddha was concerned with enlightenment and not really with epistemological and ontological questions

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
Since both Yogacara and Theravada, are doctrines and thus interpretations of sutta.... Hi S. How would you summarise your viewpoint of each of the above? How is Yogacara an 'interpretation' of sutta? How is Theravada an 'interpretation' of sutta? Thank you :) This is quite simple. First you have th...

Re: theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
Yogacara and madhayamaka Hi D. How would you summarise the doctrine of each of the above? Thank you :) In brief Madhyamaka:- the main theme of this philosophy is refutation of existance of svabhāva, so all dhammas are empty of svabhāva (substance). Nagarjunas goes on to show that when dhammas have ...

theravada attitude towards yogacara and madhyamaka
So I have been reading Yogacara and madhayamaka, and I have really felt in love with Yogacara (more than with Abhidhamma). In my opinion Yogacara doesn't seem to be uncompatible with Theravada. by my understanding some theravada's thinkers were influenced by Yogacara (it is something I have read on ...

dudette wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 1:59 pm So my question is this, do some Theravada Buddhists (laypeople, monks and masters) just practice anapana to develop both samadhi and vipassna? Yes. But if this is the case then why from 20th century forward there such hype to separate samatha and vipassana i...

Vipassana meditations
I think this question is asked a lot here, but I will ask it anyway because I am getting a little bit confused. So I did the goenka's vipassana meditation (I do realize that some people dislike him here, it is understandable because of the technique and downgraded version of buddhism) But lately, I ...

temporary ordination in thailand (need help)
Hello everyone! :) On one of my vipassana retreat, I have met a person who was a monk in thailand, vietnam and burma (did a temporary ordination during each summer). He told me that some monasteries in Thailand do temporary ordinations for foreigners (1-3 months) without a problem. Recently, I have ...

Re: concentration on the breath
Ok this thread might appear stupid for some, but it is because I have only access to Goenka's and Zazen's traditions. So lately, I have been talking to two teachers on the vipassana course, and they said that in Goenka's tradition, they concentrate on a chosen spot such as the upper lip while the b...
