Re: Abhidhamma teachings in the Suttas

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LIK3h-UMwaw Unbelievable. So this monk thinks there is no tipitaka, just a dvipitaka. And he takes pride in being heretical. Wow. He is being sarcastic. He was excomunicated (in Thailand) for ordaining a female bhikuni in Australia. https://sujato.wordpress.com/2009/11...

Re: Abhidhamma teachings in the Suttas

Greetings, It's probably worth noting that the term "abhidhamma" appears in the suttas, but in that context it simply refers to the Buddha's teaching which do not infer a conventional person... thus, that which addresses elements, sense-bases, mindstates etc. Then there is "Abhidhamm...

Re: The great Abhidhamma Pitaka authenticity debate

Read the suttas, read the abidhama commentary. Does one seem clear, simple, straightforward and obviously divine? Does one seem constructed, manmade, superfluous? If so, there is your answer. If not, there is your answer. Let me give an example... Verse The wise ones who are intent on meditation, wh...

Re: Linguistics Reason: Ananda Memorized Sutta For The Other, But Sariputta Memorized Abhidhamma That Buddha Directly Ta

Sorry but I have not made claims about the contents of the abbhidhamma. I had only expressed disapproval about authenticity claims made over here such as: Sariputta who died before the Buddha memorizing the abbhidhama as a form of secret teaching when we know that Buddha said he had not kept anythi...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

As you might have heard the commentary tradition holds that the Abhidhamma was actually the word of the Buddha.' But clearly it is not. In my opinion, Sutta knowledge of Dhamma without Abhidhamma is lame. The Abhidhamma knowledge without Sutta is blind. Vinaya Pitaka = Sila (virtues) Sutta Pitaka =...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

We have plenty of monastery in SL. We can find one we like. But thats hard to say : ok I like that, or I dont like that. Who I am to say that? For me the main things is Love. If a abbot does not think with love and compassion, he does not understand the buddha speach. Whatever the technic or etc. W...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

Why Sri Lanka but not Myanmar or Thailand or a Western monastery like Bodhiyana? I'm asking out of curiosity. SL offers the best all around environment for practicing seriously plus long term visa, strong support from lay devotees. I have lived in Thailand and Burma. I have visited many western her...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

But that is laughable on its face ecause the. Abhidhamma came, what, a thousand years after the buddha? Didn"t the buddha warn against adding to and tinkering with the teachings? I think you're thinking of late commentary rather than Canonical Abhidhamma, which is largely an analysis of the su...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

I agree however that if one intends to ordain at a place, it makes sense to agree with the main teacher's interpretation or at least listen to his instructions. Otherwise one isn't really taking him as one's teacher. I think finding a right teacher is the biggest hurdle of being a monk. More you kn...

Re: Nissarana Vanaya

Mainly because even the best places in Sri Lanka are overly influenced by the Abhidhamma and commentaries. ] This is surprising . What is the reason for it? Why do they give less emphasis to Sutta? Mainly because of Burmese influence (Pa Auk/Goenka/Mahasi). Also partly because it is still almost bl...
