Re: Against the stream centers shutting down
I used to watch their live streams on facebook. I have to say I find it weird they had a separate group for POC (people of color). I don't know why they hade to segregate things by race. Seems like a very American thing to do these days.

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate
I want to give away my dhamma books. I thought that a prison would be the best place to send them. Can some please tell what would be the best way to go about this?

Re: Why Read the Suttas?
... Thank you Johnk, i apprecaite the reply. :anjali: You're welcome. Here is another about which Thanissaro Bhikkhu has this to say: "The topic treated in greatest detail concerns the differences among the castes of the Buddha's time, and the Buddha's remarks can profitably be applied to issu...

Re: Why Read the Suttas?
Are there specfic suttas that might help me teach me how to deal with racism? Here is one possibility -- this sutta contains the simile of the saw (at the end of the sutta). However, "racism" is a broad term that can apply to many things, so this simile may or may not be relevant to your ...

Re: Compassion fatigue
Clearly a lot of people on these forums have lost compassion. Not only that, instead of helping each other learn, so many are quick to use their knowledge of the suttas to put others down .

Re: Pure Land Buddhism and the Pali Canon
Do followers of Pure Land meditate a lot or does practices consist of mostly chanting? Pureland practice consists of a short service in reverence to Amitabha Buddha, the recitation of the shorter pureland sutra followed by chanting Namo Amitabha Buddha. Along with meditation, observation of the pre...

Re: Slavic Buddhism vs Western Buddhism
A friend of mine just back from the Ukraine and said most people were quite nice but he it was quite common to see young men with white supremacist tattoos or paraphernalia. If racism is something Eastern European don't think about it is probably because they have no one to call them out as much as ...

Re: There is no such thing as insight practice. [Was:insight requires access concentration?]
I didn't want to open another thread so I will ask in here. Is samadhi supposed to lead to Jhana? If so why doesn't the Goenka branch of vipassana talk about it? During the the Goenka retreat you do three and a half days of pure anapana meditation. After getting concentrated wouldn't this lead to Jh...
