Re: Question about a section in the Milindapanha
I do not understand in what sense, for instance, fire is said to 'exist' when there are no flames. It exists as a phenomenon. The king cannot have doubts that there is such thing as fire (in contrast to Nibbāna, in which he doubts), but he cannot point where it is stored. Ok, thanks! I see! :anjali...

Re: Question about a section in the Milindapanha
Thanks for answering!
My doubt however is another... I should have been clearer, sorry!
I do not understand in what sense, for instance, fire is said to 'exist' when there are no flames.
How should understand it according to the commentarial tradition?
Thanks again in advance!

Question about a section in the Milindapanha
Hello all, In the Milindapanha, section 6.3.12 (T.W. Rhys Davids translation, 'The Place of Nirvāṇa', source: https://suttacentral.net/mil6.3.12/en/tw_rhysdavids ) reads: ‘Venerable Nāgasena, does there exist the spot—either in the direction of the East, or of the South, or of the West, or of the No...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
what I meant in that post is that the Arahant does not "see",for example, "death" as a "death of a being". So, in this sense "death" ceases (i.e. there is a change in how "death" is seen). In my understanding, for proponents of the "structural ...

Re: Bill V. on Theravadan nihilism
I agree! It is implicit. Nibbana is permanent. Personally, I have no problem in saying this because eternalism is the view that “atta" is eternal. Also, in those two quotations Nibbana is even said to be “eternal” (sassata). To me, this is in perfect agreement with the suttas where nowhere it ...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
Hence, I wonder if "the cessation of the links" is best seen as structural while the "arising of the links" is best seen as sequential... Thinking of how birth, aging and death are described, it might be the other way way round, like a "winding down" of successive nida...

Re: Bill V. on Theravadan nihilism
Sometimes ideas can change very quickly. I have to say, however, that I have changed a bit my understanding of "dukkha". In fact, as it has been pointed to me e.g. here ,probably "dukkha" is best translated as "unsatisfying" when we refer to the "Three Marks",...

Re: Bill V. on Theravadan nihilism
Hello Way~farer, Thank you for the answer! One is that what is 'timeless' is not the same as 'what has endless duration'. One can imagine 'something of great duration' in terms of a mountain peak, a post set fast, and other similes that are given in various texts. The idea here is of some entity or ...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
Let me summarize the “3” options. Thank you for that summary. I don't disagree. However, though there may be detailed differences between the interpretation of the nibbana "attainment" itself between the Classical Theravada, Your option 2, and possibly Ven Nananada's version, they have in...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
Greetings Mike, That seems to be the traditional Theravada view, and it is also what Ven Nananda argues in his Nibbana Sermons: http://seeingthroughthenet.net/ https://www.buddhistinquiry.org/resources/bhikkhu-analayo-lectures This interpretation (that "Nibbana during life" is not somethin...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
Just to clarify, when I said in the previous message: I was referring to another interpretation, in fact. Of course, “contact with ignorance” does not restart. It is contact that ceases and restarts in that view as I understand it. In the view I was referring to, at "Nibbana during life" a...

Re: Which view on DO resonates with you the most?
... Greetings DooDoot, Thanks for your answer. It is generally said "sankhara" is the "broadest" term because of its broad range of meanings. Ok… Did I say something wrong? You might think that but that is not what is meant by "akaliko". “Akaliko” either means AFAIK “t...
