Re: Flesh desires along with mindfulness

Anyway, there's no need to worry too much about the sex part, any intelligent man would much rather prefer a wife with mediocre performance in bed, but a nice caring wife who really takes care of her husband, her kids, and her house; over a wife with a porn-star-grade performance, but a nasty wife ...

Re: Flesh desires along with mindfulness

I meditate at most two hours per day and during the weekends or school vacations I have to make an effort to mediate even one hour, and yet, even with this spotty practice I have found myself almost completely lacking in lust for several months. And this is very funny, because it was probably lust t...

Re: The Buddha displaying sense of humor

seeing humour in day to day activities is joyful and uplifting this is necessary trait for teachers when working with new meditators. If your students get depressed a good teacher can be uplifting. He/ she doesn’t have to come off as a comedian but they can use humour to lift spirits occasionally. ...

Re: Loved this ❤️

This discussion about the terminal illness nature of lay arahantship almost always fascinates me. That there could be such a downside to culminating the practice as a layperson (especially as a layperson with no Theravada temples within an hour's drive of me) is a bit scary...although, probably impe...

Re: Seven Factors of Awakening

So , how does the factor of equanimity lead you or get you to attain enlightenment/liberation ? As I see it, equanimity liberates one from greed and aversion since it is neither the state of wanting nor the state of not-wanting. An equanimous person accepts their situation or the action required of...

I am sure you can. Buddha's truth is universal truth. Sending you much metta for your journey!

Re: Vipassana is not the way to enlightenment.

Vipassana is not the way to enlightenment. Just sitting ten hours is a waste of time. The best time to sleep is after 4.00am. You can meditate about one hour at 7.00am. It is more productive. Observing precepts are more important than meditation to attain enlightenment. Is this a fair criticism? Vi...

Re: The Buddha displaying sense of humor

Maybe it was meant to be funny and maybe it wasn't but when I came across this today, I couldn't help but laugh out loud, literally: If, on reflecting, he realizes that there are evil, unskillful mental qualities unabandoned by him that would be an obstruction for him were he to die in the night, th...

Re: Stream Entry

Based on my reading (and not any attainment), I think you have too many qualifiers to be. As a practical matter, it may not make any difference: Would you stop practicing either way -- with so much more to attain regardless? Keep on keepin' on. (It might be useful to try to see the cause of your qu...

Re: Can Animals Commit The Five Heinous Crimes?

Thanks for your answer. It's got some super cool anecdotes, and I'm glad that you shared them. You're welcome! It's always sort of a risk to share meditative visions with non-meditators :rolleye: , but I feel more comfortable sharing them here on DhammaWheel since it's fairly common for meditators ...

Re: Can Animals Commit The Five Heinous Crimes?

I think the answer depends on whether animals have volition for their acts, assuming that the volition behind an act determines its kammic consequences. I seem to recall a Jakata-type story in which a human, seeing that a starving tigress wanted to kill him to feed her starving cub, slit his own thr...

Re: Thich Quang Duc

Well, obviously I have never self-immolated, but I would like to put in my two cents about meditation and pain. I've been a meditator only since about August 2017, but this January I finally got into a 10-day Vipassana retreat at a nearby Goenka center. As many of you may know, the go-to phrase for ...

Re: Making Hats for Monastics

Woolly hats are essential in the winter, especially in the north of Thailand where temperatures can drop down to zero or even below, such as today (apparently Doi Inthanon was even colder -5 Celsius at 2600 meters). Oh! I would love to send some hats to Thailand. I'm not sure if they will be done b...

Making Hats for Monastics

Hello Friends, At a discount shop I have had some luck in finding a quantity of wool yarn in rusty orange. I would like to use it to make hats for Buddhist monastics. My questions are as follows: 1. Are there any preferred knitting or crochet patterns? 2. Should all hats be more or less identical, o...
