Re: Resurfacing memories during meditation?

Buddha does make reference to practicing with a group of monks where their practice has become free of commotion and arising emotions. So yes, it is in the Suttas, but in the context of the absence of it. Which leads to the point, it is a good thing when it happens. But they are very common at retre...

Re: Gradual Yoga training

Professor Malinson has shown (look up on youtube) that hatha yoga as a system originated with Tantric Buddhism ((tantra exists within both Theraveda and Mahayana)) but during the Islamic invasions of South Asia many of these communities of yogis converted to Hinduism, taking yoga with it. He has wri...

Re: Potthapada And Nihilism

The discussion in the Sutta is on the Cessation of Perception... this isn't elementary Buddhist teaching by the way. Without agreeing or disagreeing with what others may want to say about this topic, giving it a fresh go, you'll see that in this Sutta the rupa and arupa jhanas are being discussed. H...

Re: Possible to lose jhana?

Everyone goes in and out of "jhana factors" from the moment the mind becomes calmed and quieted. There isn't "losing" and "winning" - instead it's more like getting on a wave and riding - then going back out for the next wave. Similarly, rupa jhanas come and go too. I h...

Re: Family life vs homeless life/being single for life.

Samgha is, or should be, like family. You go to a retreat and feel like you have known these people all your life. That should be enough. Platonic relationships are okay too, nobody should make sexuality a condition of friendship. It's possible to be a lay person in a relationship or marriage and st...

naw, here we part ways. Anchoring to the breath is sufficient because it's done using the 4 bases or foundations. It is stable.

coconut: that's the interpretation I have as well. I'm not a Pali scholar but based on meditation experience, my interpretation is what you suggest. I really have no idea what others think about Anapannasati, I have heard a few variations, usually in the context "everyone has their own opinion&...

Re: 'meditation' on Zen coans

Yes, even the best case scenario, it's still not going to lead to insight. What leads to insight is suppressing the 5 hindrances long enough so that the 7 factors of awakening develop. Upon reaching equanimity (4th jhana), full insight can start to develop, and partial insight in the previous jhana...

Re: Frank Yang is DONE!

Psychedelic drugs pose a bit of a problem, because they change the perception, in some ways permanently, so therefore it's IMPOSSIBLE for the subject to ever know what it could have been like WITHOUT having had them. In the USA, 17% of the population is said to be lifetime users of psychedelic drugs...

Re: origin and meaning of this symbol

it looks like the Sanskrit (although it is said to pre-date Sanskrit) "OM" orthographic character inserted into the middle of the Thai "OM" - seems redundant - maybe from a piece of jewelry etc. Where's it from?

This body of mine is endowed with form, composed of the four primary elements, born from mother and father, nourished with rice and porridge, subject to inconstancy, rubbing, pressing, dissolution, and dispersion. And this consciousness of mine is supported here and bound up here.' "This, too,...

Re: Jhana

Jhana is not an attainment, because it is revealing only what already is there. It is the overcoming of ignorance that makes it so it cannot be seen. Jhana is awakening that requires adept practice, whether sitting, standing, walking, etc. In the 4th jhana, object and subject both disappear. In the ...

Re: Boys in cave: the meditation perspective

I lived in village in the Philippines for 6 years, and walked around villages and rural areas in India and rural people are bright happy, simple and very durable, these mind quacks need to spend more time with them if anything to sort out their mental issues not the other way around. I am skeptic a...

Re: Mindfulness Meditation

Thanks! I have heard that what is being called Mindfulness Meditation is more closely aligned with samatha, and what is taught as Insight Meditation is often closer to vipasana, but in many cases there’s a mixture of the two, and of course, different traditions call things by different terms and ha...
