Re: Why is jesus christ more popular than the buddha?
These are the reasons why I think Jesus Christ is more popular than the Buddha - 1. Christianity caters to the lowest in societies - Buddhism grew in Ancient India where spiritual pursuit was part of the culture. Buddhism had to stand above and beyond other religions that existed in Ancient India at...

Re: Can one go for full Bhikkhu ordination in a different Theravada monastic lineage after committing a Parajika in anot
It makes me wonder what expulsion means, really, if still using khutis, robes, food, other materials donated to a sangha. There may be issues of compassion in this, but also in representations to Buddhist laity and non Buddhists. Seems there might be a lot of potential for further mistakes and gene...

Parajika https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%81%E1%B9%ADimokkha#Parajika The important thing is also that this person will be able to continue practicing Dharma as a Layperson and can achieve Enlightenment! :anjali: An Ajahn in the monastery that I am living in told me that Magga Pala in this life c...

Re: How can insomnia get treated
Insomnia by and large arises from a restless mind. Making meditation a part of one's daily activities can help. But in addition to this its about making an effort to be mindful at all times where the mind is fully applied to whichever activity that we do. A mind that can easily let go of thoughts ca...

Re: Thullaccaya & Dukkata list
What helped me was Thanissaro's two volumes on Vinaya; over a thousand pages in total if I'm not mistaken. Probably doesn't have a full list of these small offenses, but it was enough for me, as the attention to detail was outstanding This is what we are using in our monastery. The dukkatas and thu...

Re: Thullaccaya & Dukkata list
I asked one of the Bhikkhus in this monastery and he did say that some monk in the past made a document listing all these Dukkatas (or maybe most of them). Its in our library. I will look in the library and try to find it out. Because if this is still not online, it would be of great benefit for it ...

Re: Misconceptions on Buddhism in relation to Hinduism
What DooDoot is saying or trying to imply is mostly true. I am currently on retreat but will try to get time to reply to this. But not that I disagree with most of what DooDoot is saying.

Re: Hello! I am back
Just a brief update. I am now a Samanera in a Theravada monastery. In this monastery there may be other members of the Sangha who may also be users of DhammaWheel. Since we all share the same internet, the DhammaWheel admins may see this as different usernames logging in under the same IP address. I...

Misconceptions on Buddhism in relation to Hinduism
During the time of Buddha in Ancient India, there were various belief systems. The most popular of these was the belief systems that were based on the Vedas. This was also a time when the Upanishads were emerging among Ancient Indian Brahmin priests. The Hinduism that existed during the time of Budd...

Re: are mosquito nets "cheating"?
Nets are completely fine. It doesnt matter whether you are indoors or outdoors - the mosquitoes will get you anyway. I am from an Asian country where I dont have any memory of a night where I havnt either seen or got stung by a mosquito.

Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and Devas
I have some questions about the Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and its Devas. 1. In the Dhammacakka Sutta it mentions the Paranimmitavasavatti Deva. Is this the leader of the Paranimmitavasavatti Realms and does this refer to Mara the sentient being? 2. Are Maras a class of Devas? 3. What are the chara...
