Re: Moha can't just be avidya....
Thanks Robert, That's a really helpful elaboration, particularly as it looks at some of the more "everyday" aspects of delusion, not just the deepest aspects of avijja These bits really stood out for me: the inability to comprehend, to grasp thoroughly; the inability to compare, to conside...

Re: Moha can't just be avidya....
Thanks for all your answers, they have been very helpful To summarise what you have clarified for me: the distinction between [temporarily] abandoning/suppressing the poisons vs complete destruction, and delusion is avijja and so really is more fundamental than the other two poisons I think the cent...

Re: Doha can't just be avidya....
... Avijja always being present, whereas aversion and craving are absent in skilful mental states... Who says so? I think there are moments of understanding in the same way there are moments without greed or without aversion. I don't mean total freedom from them but moments when you understand &quo...

Re: Doha can't just be avidya....
Doha ? In Pāli, it means "injuring" or "milking". You are most likely talking about moha , "delusion", "infatuation". Moha is synonymous with avijjā . Yes, moha, thanks for the correction - I think I picked up the D from Delusion by mistake! It is a surprisin...

Moha can't just be avidya....
I have been trying to find out more about how Delusion is analysed in the Suttas, or indeed, in more modern texts/talks As one of the three unwholesome roots, I would expect it to mean something quite a lot stronger that the avidya that everyone is subject to short of enlightenment. We consider that...

Re: Ethics based on intention vs consequences
Thanks for your thoughts Sam
Yes! Nicely put. Thus, it's helpful to see the motivation implicit in his advice to Rahula. Once Rahula has worked out whether an action is conducive to others' harm [...] then he still has to formulate an intention.

Ethics based on intention vs consequences
Hi all, I hope this is a suitable place to raise this topic? The Pali Canon frequently (usually, even) defines the ethics of actions based on whether they are driven by the unwholesome root - actions of body, speech and mind that are driven by greed, hatred or delusion are considered unethical. Then...

Do you recognise this story?
(Apologies - I posted this message to the Pali language forum earlier, but I think this is probably the correct place for it) I remember reading a story in the Pali Canon somewhere, and I would really like to locate the source... I wonder whether anyone recognises the story, and even better, might k...
