Re: Momentary blanking out of consciousness

If you blanked out of consciousness, how can you recall it? If you slept, how can you recall it? I just remembered what happened before I lost consciousness, and when I "woke up" after the loss of consciousness I looked at the time and it was 6 or so minutes; for some reason, I had looked at the ti...

Re: Momentary blanking out of consciousness

I experienced a moment of blanking out of consciousness and seem to remember reading about this as a side effect of insight meditation (which i do not practice, i do a chan method). It was disconcerting, like being completly gone for a split second while wide awake and then blinking back into exist...

I notice you have a 100% category but no 0% category. Anyway, hopefully no one is 0% but if we define 100% as someone being an arahant, then 0% would be more common than 100%.
I think the poll system only allows for 10 options, doesn't it. Would be worth increasing it if that's the case.

Sarath, thank goodness you made the poll editable because my happiness percentages are rising.
Mine are going down due to seasonal bah-humbuggery.
Oh no! Why does Christmas perturb you, if I may ask.

Re: Why telling lie is so bad?

At certain points, I believed that telling lies is the worst offence out of the five precepts, and that has some substance to it, because it is said that in his Bodhisatta career, the person that was to become the Buddha broke all precepts except the fourth - he never told a single lie in all those ...

I used this term from modern psychology But we can understand in terms of seventeen thought moments in Abhidhamma. I know you are not a fan of Abhidhamma. In Abhidhamma there are certain Citta does not complete the whole thought process. So they perhaps vanish even before they have a major impact o...

Re: Pali pronunciation

Thank you for the links, Dmytro! I think all Slavic languages have very similar pronunciation to each other, and maybe all of them may be closer to the Indian Prakrit languages Sanskrit and Pāḷi (I don't know how Hindi sounds) than the Germanic languages. I think Italians and Spaniards might also fi...

Different cosmic durations - just FYI

Earlier in the year, I was curious how long heaven and hell were, and how long did the Bodhisatta practice for - in terms of years. So I found out (I think in Wikipedia) how long an eon was and then calculated the various durations. Just for comparison, I have also shown the various important histor...

Re: If life is suffering, then wouldn't it be unethical to have children?

Being a parent is a great responsibility. You are basically heavily responsible for the life of the child you are bringing up and how they turn up to be as human beings. That means that first of all you have to have developed yourself well enough before thinking of having kids - otherwise how are yo...

It's not just to read or to listen to the discourse - the most important thing is to understand it
Agree.
But there is a subliminal effect when you listen to Sutta.
Your inner mind is smarter than your critical mind.

Yes in regards to Jhana, I just exaggerated a bit. ;)

Re: If life is suffering, then wouldn't it be unethical to have children?

Well, isn't it a type of suffering then? I agree that some people do not suffer when things change for the worse, but the suffering due to change does exist, and most people, when they lose their happiness, health, youth, loved ones, or cherished possessions - they suffer. https://www.accesstoinsigh...

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

Greetings Stiphan, Agreed. I think it is important to have a charitable attitude towards oneself and others. Not necessarily charitable in the "relating to the assistance of those in need" sense (though of course that is a good thing too!), but moreso in the "apt to judge others leniently or favour...

Re: If life is suffering, then wouldn't it be unethical to have children?

Dear Doo Doot, so does this mean that the second type of suffering ( vipariṇāma-dukkha , suffering due to change), which I believe is a canonical teaching, is invalid and it is not actually dukkha simply because some people do not suffer due to change? And that we should instead have only two types ...

Re: What everyone participating in forums should understand

Thanks for the sutta reference, Retro! Well, you referred to these people as 'listeners' but they are actually 'responders', and their speech is - in your view - more to blame than the original speakers. I'd say both are caught in a cycle of dosa , aversion. The people you refer to are just 'fightin...

Re: If life is suffering, then wouldn't it be unethical to have children?

Yes, that is better put. But you can say that life is unsatisfactory (for us putthujanas). Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkha - all conditioned things are dukkha, dukkha having three levels: (1) dukkha-dukkhata: ordinary suffering and pain; (2) viparinama-dukkhata: suffering due to change, meaning that even ple...

Re: I am back

Thanks, Sarath, that's very kind of you! Good suggestion to listen to the MN. I prefer Bhikkhu Bodhi's translations over Ṭhanissāro Bhikkhus' ones. Just personal preference. If I have the time, it would be good to listen to his talks on the MN suttas. But about listening to the suttas themselves, we...
