Re: Sāriputta in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta?

Phew. I finished the sutta. More than 7 hours did it take me. Last two times I read it (back in 2007 and ca. 2012), it took me about 5 hours, but today I also had breaks and a few other extraneous things to attend to. I was also more attentive while reading it and enjoyed it more than before. It is ...

Re: Which is the most important precept to get right for the Noble Path?

Well, the Noble Eightfold Path begins with Right view. Right view is a facet of wisdom, and wisdom is knowing, seeing and understanding truth. So truthfulness and honesty, and the acknowledgement and appreciation of truth is a prerequisite, or what you first need, before you start practicing the Nob...

Re: Sāriputta in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta?

I am reading DN 16 now, and I saw Sāriputta mentioned therein (declaring his bull's statement that there has never been, will be nor is now anyone greater than the Buddha), and I was like "Wait a minute, didn't Sāriputta die long before the Buddha's last journey?". In DN 16, he is mentioned precise...

But the Lord, as swiftly as a strong man might stretch out his flexed arm or flex it again, vanished from this side of the Ganges and reappeared with his order of monks on the other shore.
Did the Buddha and the monks teleport themselves?
Yes.
Awesome!

Re: Sāriputta in the Mahāparinibbāna sutta?

And by the way, I just came to this (at 1.33): And then the Lord came to the River Ganges. And just then, the river was so full that a crow could drink out of it. And some people were looking for a boat, and some were looking for a raft, and some were binding together a raft of reeds to get to the o...

Re: Is hatred always bad, if you hate what should be hated?

I don't know if this classifies as "hatred", but the Buddha has this to say about certain psychic powers in the Kevaṭṭa Sutta [aka Kevaḍḍha Sutta]:

‘And that is why, Kevaddha, seeing the danger of such miracles, I dislike, reject and despise them.

Re: Is hatred always bad, if you hate what should be hated?

I want to thank Sam Vara and Nicolas, and I can now say that I agree with them that there is no room for hatred towards anything, let alone anyone. In such cases as I previously might have opined that "hating evil might be appropriate," I now believe that one should arouse equanimity instead and the...

Re: A happy new year

I don't have any resolutions, but I have great plans that I will have to start carrying out on January 1. Should be an awesome year for me and I am quite looking forward to it! For the world... I hope so, but politically it seems to be going downhill since Brexit and Trump's election. The worst I am...

Do plants feel pain?

I'll tell you a short funny story first. Back in February, I was in a park near Manchester airport. I had been walking through a huge field of grass, and I was only 5 metres away from the asphalt alley, when suddenly I wondered: "Hang on a second, does the grass underneath me actually feel pain when...

Re: Buddhism and alcohol

Alcohol is so disgusting and harmful as to be beyond belief. I've only tried a couple of glasses of a few beverages, just to try it, the taste was terrible, except wine. Overall, I've drunk less than 20 glasses of alcohol in my life, all in my teens before becoming a Buddhist. Drugs are even worse, ...

Re: Alone not lonely

Thanks Stephen your advice to just do good a few years ago was the catalyst in my recovery. Thank you. Without that I doubt I would be where I am today psychologically. Wishing you great fortune 😀 That's awesome, Befriend! I'm really glad to hear that. Now learn to be your own best friend, then you...

Re: Alone not lonely

You're never alone - you're always with somebody - with yourself! You need a good relationship with yourself, to be at peace with yourself, in order to not only not be lonely but - even more - to enjoy being alone and even find it preciously awesome, like I do! As I say, the trick is to be your own ...

Re: 30 hours without any sleep and counting

Greetings Stiphan, Either way, take care! I'm DJing back to back on the nights of December 30 and New Year's Eve, so I'm predicting a period of not much sleep for me soon. Thankfully I've managed to arrange the set times for December 30, so I'll be finished by 11.45 p.m. Unfortunately, on the morni...

Yes I agree, great app! Computers and tablets are amazing these days eh. Unfortunately the app just increased my appreciation for the miracle that is the human body, and was not useful for asubha at all. Glad you like it! Just remember that the body is impermanent, painful, and not-self, as well as...

i just am not seeing your logic here. kind of an empty declaration
My logic is simple: male issues should be decided by men, female issues by women.

Since I am not a woman, and I said enough, I bow out.

Take care, friend.
