Re: Parinibbana from the Perspective of Abhidhamma

Citta can have nibbana as object, this is what happens with lokuttara citta. This is a big difference between lokuttara citta and other wholesome citta, having nibbana as object. When an arahat passes into parinibbana, then does even the lokuttara citta cease to exist? If so, then what or who is it...

Re: Parinibbana from the Perspective of Abhidhamma

Hello, as far as I understand parinibbana means (among othet things) the end of citta. So this is the difference between parinibbana and rebirth, the 5 khanda (consciousness is one of them) cease. With normal rebirth they continue. Nibbana does not fit into the citta scheme. Citta can have nibbana a...

Re: To those who have ordained or plan to ordain

What is currently holding you back from ordaining? - Parents, girlfriend, the idea that the "resistance" I would have to face in order to ordain might make live more difficult while I can achieve good results as a lay practitioner without such resistance (just more slowly... maybe good for my khant...

Earth-gazing for Jhana with Brahmavihara in Dhammasangani

Hello, I am reading the Dhammasangani PTS translation by mrs. Rhys-Davids (2004 edition). There is one passage that I found strange on p.59, book I, part I, Chapter II, IV. Jhanas of the Diviine States. It reads: [IV. The Four Jhanas of the Divine States (cattari bhramaviharajhanani). 1. Love (metta...

Re: Those who follow Ajahn Brahm's method - help

Hello, Do you feel more concentrated, more content after meditation? If this is the case and you have faith in the system and the teacher then don't change system. When I read your story I think: Patience! You have only meditated for 1 year and only every day since august... In the beginning 30 minu...

Does Vitakka have different intensities?

Hey all, I have a question about vitakka. Is there a basis in the Abhidhamma for 'different levels' or 'intensities' of vitakka? During meditation on 'Buddho', access concentration is the highest achievable since the qualities of the buddha are so manyfold. This is stated in the Visudhimagga and the...

Re: Inconsistency about base coinciding with Citta and Cetasika?

thanks for the replies! I called it a contradiction because I couldn't find the right word :). What I meant was more a point of confusion... I guess both answeres are plausible, that the bases are two sides of the same coin, and that there might be a difference between vatthu and ayatana lost in tra...

If no one here can help me, does anyone know another place where I could ask this question?

Inconsistency about base coinciding with Citta and Cetasika?

Dear fellow abhidhamma students, I was studying the Abhidhammattha Sangaha (bhikkhu bodhi's version) when I stumbled over what appears to be an inconsistency. It is probalby just a failure to understand things correctly on my side, so I hope one of you can clarify the issue. It is about the base coi...

hallo hans!

Welkom op het Theravada forum, leuk een andere Nederlander hier te zien. Trouwens, er zijn toch best wat meditatie/studie groepen in Nederland?

Groetjes,

I would suggest that its significance is by association. Not with anything intrinsic. I guess for people like me these things stay suggestions or ideas or opinions :). Personally I will trust in the teachers who have spend their lifetime meditating and who know due to personal experience. Hopefully...

Re: Buddho

Greetings Cooran, It simply represents a audible alternative as an object. as far as I understand this is not entirely true. There is a reason for the specific word Buddho and its effect. Then again, I cannot show you a single book as proof, only what my meditation teachers say. Apparently it makes...

Re: Buddho

Greetings, In this system wisdom comes automatically with the concentration. How does 'buddho' then differ from something like the Hindu 'OM' which doesn't lead to "path and fruition"? Metta, Retro. :) I cannot give any deep meaning or anything like that out of personal experience :), I do find tha...

Re: Buddho

I have been practicing samatha meditation on the sound of Buddho for 5 years. It is a system from my Birmese teacher in Thailand. In his system this is not an addition to anapanasati or anything, it is a meditation on its own. You can use it from beginning to end, no switching of meditation object i...

Oh my, that is a very old draft of that essay.... Hello Geoff, could you put the newest version of your essay online (or send it to me via PM)? The old one is very good already (even though I am more of the abhidhamma inclination ;)), but if you have made additions to it I'm definately interested i...

Re: interaction with environment?

I think the location of the mind is mentioned as being in the heart and the head in the visuddhi (vimutti?) magga- as you can see I'm not sure. But emotions and thoughts seem to be felt in the heart and the head experientially -so more recently even though I dismissed it first, I feel there maybe s...

To both of you, thank you for the informationand and the links! It is very helpful. @thereductor: As to how the mind interacts with the body: you have it wrong.... they are not two things that interact only in a limited space, but are actually one thing. There is no mind without body, the body is on...

interaction with environment?

Dear all, as far as I understand citta have the characteristic of cognizing, of knowing. I (think) I understand the principle pf how the citta receive information from the environment, like when eye sees an object and the whole vithi starts. But what I do not understand is how the return path works....
