Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

Indeed it seems puzzling to us worldlings because it's in a dimension we're yet able to penetrate thru. Yes, Santa, I believe I'll just have to leave it at that. I thank DooDoot for this link: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.11.0.than.html In it I found further indication of the araha...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

My position is that the knowledge accrued through all these paradigm is of equal worth; one accretion is not superior to the other. When it comes to explaining climate change (what this topic is based on ....I guess) their worth is not equal. chownah That is your opinion Chownah and I respect it. F...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

...The public should be provided with a well-rounded view of climate change and reasoned arguments from both sides ... "Both sides"? Which sides did you have in mind? Both sides being the side that argues that climate change is an imminent threat to humanity created by humanity, and the side that a...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

It basically entails a lifestyle that just makes every attempt, within reason, to not consume things or do things that harm animals. Perhaps we should add to the list that one's food should not be grown with animal products (manures, blood, bone, fishmeal etc.) and should not be grown using pestici...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

I will try again, making the emphasis stronger: science offers us the best way of examining and understanding the physical world, and that putting religious perspectives on an equal footing in this role leads to nonsense ... I almost have to laugh Kim, when both of us know that the best way of exam...

Re: Changes in attitudes towards global warming

You're quite right that the opening is overly sensationalist. On the other hand, if you were surprised by that, you have been avoiding mass media more successfully than I have. Kim, I'm afraid I don't understand how these hands are attached to the same body; I don't see the connection. ... ...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

Perhaps we should add to the list that one's food should not be grown with animal products (manures, blood, bone, fishmeal etc.) and should not be grown using pesticides. I am currently working on growing vegetables in this manner. chownah Ah, and here is where there may be an issue for me as well....

Should You Trust Climate Science? Maybe the Eclipse Is a Clue Eclipse mania will peak on Monday, when millions of Americans will upend their lives in response to a scientific prediction. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/18/climate/should-you-trust-climate-science-maybe-the-eclipse-is-a-clue.html :na...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

I am not so very familiar with what a vegan "lifestyle" would entail. It basically entails a lifestyle that just makes every attempt, within reason, to not consume things or do things that harm animals. For example, only plant food diet, no flesh, no dairy, no eggs. No food with animal based ingred...

Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

I hope you don't mean "divine" literally and remember what you say about the nature of Buddha is also true of your nature. Thanks Caodemarte, for your concern. I use the phrase "fully human/fully divine" only as a theological "handle" on my understanding of the nature of Christ, Buddha, you, me, an...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

It was exactly the fifth precept of Buddhism that drew me into the three refuges. Nothing spoke to me as warmly and lovingly as this precept...and I doubt that I will ever find such welcoming acceptance of a "harm not" worldview in any other path. I apologize for an error in this post. It is the fi...

Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

With a significant area of confusion now cleared up satisfactorily for my own understanding, I would like to revisit the matter of Buddha's claim: "Bhikkhus, to whatever extent I wish, I wield the various kinds of spiritual power: having been one, I become many; having been many, I become one..." It...

Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

Buddhism's fifth precept is what is keeping me on this path. Christianity as a religion is far from ready to extend compassion to non-human beings, in fact many arguments can be made for their exploitation and misuse within the sacred text. In re-reading the posts I am dismayed to see a mindless er...

Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

Namaste to all for such thought-provoking replies. I read and re-read all the posts last night and again this morning. I think I even may have included some of the words in my dream last night. In my mind were these words: ." ...we should understand that while it may be true from a wordly perspectiv...

Re: SN 16.9 Jhānābhiññā Sutta. Jhanas and Direct Knowledges.

I suspect you came from a Mahayana background or at least your first exposure to Buddhism was thru a Mahayana lense, correct? There's a common misconception among Mahayanist circle about the "transcendent" idea about the Buddha. That all His physical ailments were just "skillful means" to demonstra...
