Re: Cetana or sankappa ?

But , sn22.56 appear to use sancetana instead of sankhara as described in the five aggregates . So , why sancetana ? Bhikkhu Bodhi says in his footnote that intention is mentioned in SN 22.56 as the most important factor in this aggregate but not as its exclusive constituent. While I don't disagree...

Re: Cetana or sankappa ?

My view is sankhara is 'mental formations', which is a much broader range of mental phenomena than mere intention or mere thinking. I think if the Buddha intended 'sankara' to be 'cetana' or 'sankappa', he would have used these words. I recall there is one sutta that says 'sankhara khandha' is 'inte...

Re: What is the " I " ?

The video sounded like Hinduism to me; given the speaker appeared to equate "awareness" or "presence" with "AM-NESS" or "I AM". Generally, the speaker kept saying "we" create "self"; thus the speaker never seemed to exclude some kind of "self". At least it took the speaker only around 9 seconds to b...

Re: VIRIYA

Actually its the entire purpose of the thread, my friend. No super or extra-ordinary power comes from semen retention. All that happens is the past accumulated sankharas settle & dissolve and future accumulated sankharas do not occur. The mind naturally may become more lucid & clear due to not bein...

Doesn't mean you are supposed to purposely spill seed.
Non-sequitur. It builds up and it releases, similar to a woman's period.

if there is any relation between seminal retention and the path than before.
The Path does not include seminal retention because Path-Enterers have nocturnal emissions.

Re: name that fallacy

What the sutta text actually says for the relevant passage they rely on, is that the breath is INCLUDED as ONE type of body . Yes. It's not REPLACING all the other types of bodies with ONLY THAT BREATH BODY. Yes. In other words, what the EBT actually says is it's legitimate to focus entirely on jus...

Even when I lived in a Thai monastery and would walk at times through the villages the grandmothers were often topless.

Re: Are there canonical teachings about the fundamental invalidity of conceptual thinking and the necessity to eliminate

I am looking for Theravadin - ideally: Canonical - teachings about the fundamental invalidity of conceptual thinking and the necessity to eliminate it. The above sounds questionable to me. Generally, the suttas teach to eliminate craving & I-making and mine-making. One example I've already found is...

Re: How should a Buddhist dress?

The spirit of what I wrote is that I think that as a Buddhist, one should dress oneself for comfort and protection (from the elements & insects), one should not dress oneself to elicit a response from others or to appear a certain way, i.e. not for adornment & beautification, and one should cover t...

Regarding having children, Europeans will have to change their ways on this soon as Europeans are going extinct with the Mohammedans are taking over. I wouldn't be surprised if Europe in the future gives an okay on polygamy for Europeans to repopulate the lands. Jesus said: My kingdom is not of thi...
