Re: Antidepressants

Are you on them and questioning the value of them? Has someone recommended you take them? I'm not sure what the purpose of this inquiry is. I find the article as unscientific as it claims the studies of anti-depressants are. It is well known that different antidepressants work for different people -...

Re: The value of nibbana

I hope i don't post this one three times - duh - talk about rebirth. I would agree that intent is different from craving. Intention like discernment can be maintained without craving. So I would agree that intention to reach nibbana is not craving. I am not sure what your point is - You are born? My...

Re: The value of nibbana

I think then we agree - the 12 steps of dependent origination - or simply the first noble truth puts to rest the idea that nibbana should be sought. If craving is suffering then craving for nibbana will lead to suffering. Self is not destroyed - but craving is. This puts an end to the DO and nibbana...

Re: The value of nibbana

What are the twelve links of DO? Are you referring to dependent origination? As far as rebirth is concerned - I don't hold to that view - this is all here now and any rebirth is from breath to breath until the breath ceases.

Re: The value of nibbana

Check out the lecture by Ajhan Amaro on nibbana on http://www.audiodharma.org/talks-all.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; 10/31/09. Nibbana is the island beyond - and to me this means beyond the craving for nibbana - and this may be the source of your confusion. Elimination of the ...

Re: Practicing with no sangha

I have been practicing with no sanga for over two years. My main source of information/inspiration has been Gil Fronsdale at IMC - all talks. I am glad I found this forum because I am beginning to feel that I need to communicate about my meditation - and to hear from others on the path. The main dis...

Re: Girl Scouts

My concern is that being surrounded by Christians she would really be joining a group of Christians who just all happen to be in the Girl Scouts. I know that many meetings and what not take place in churches and such. My wife thinks this would be good for her and she is born and raised in Thailand a...

Re: The four noble truths - and craving.

So my comment may fall under the 'duh' category but maybe you all can teach me something. My understanding is the first noble truth is that there is suffering - Ive always heard it that way. I understand the source of suffering is craving but the statement that "there is suffering" is different from...

Re: Dhammacariya Sutta

Its difficult to comprehend - on a practical level - what impurity means. This is the eightfold path? Cela? In the context of the sutta - it would seem that impurity is referring to something much more vile than is covered by right thought, right action ect. Clarify please?

Re: The Danger of Rebirth

Great discussion by all - learned lots from following this thread. However, I'm still inclined to simply dismiss the idea of rebirth - much as I would the idea of Christ being resurrected. The way I understand rebirth is how it happens in my own life. I was reborn from child to teenager, teenager to...
