Re: Slandering buddha

There's the Kesi Sutta approach, too. I think a combination of the Canki Sutta (Safeguarding the truth) and the Kesi Sutta (on how to train) will help you overcome this false dilemma. You can leave at your leisure, but I think you don't have to hold so fiercely to the idea that others must be banis...

Re: Slandering buddha

So what do you think would be achieved by describing people who come to this Forum like that?

Re: Slandering buddha

The Buddha did, famously, criticise Sāti, son of a fisherman, in MN 38: https://suttacentral.net/mn38/en/bodhi When this was said, the bhikkhu Sāti, son of a fisherman, sat silent, dismayed, with shoulders drooping and head down, glum, and without response. Then, knowing this, the Blessed One told h...

Honestly I am not sure but under the current circumstances i was inclined to do it. Not because i was angry but because i saw it fit and tactically viable.
Did it have a beneficial effect?

Well the Buddha did call people worthless, but it was never when they were making a genuine effort to understand him.
And only when it would be helpful in some way...

That people fixed in wrong view and misrepresent the Dhamma ought not be referred to as worthless?
Will it be beneficial to call them worthless? If not, it probably should not be said, as far as I understand the Buddha...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

Hi Dylan, I request that the moderators do not simply defer to reminding us of the terms of service & find a way to proactively promote concord & harmony on this forum, whether that involves changing the terms of service or working around them. ... I wrote a rather lengthy post recently on one of th...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

I like the viriya of the dedicated group: so we can be appreciative of that. :anjali: Yes, viriya is important, but the five spiritual faculties (or seven enlightenment factors) need to be balanced. From the Visuddhimagga: Then if the vigor faculty (viriya) is too strong, the faith faculty cannot p...

Re: Slandering buddha

I think personally if someone is referred to as worthless, that is referring to harshly and i guess you think it only "appears" to be harsh. Well in that case when i refer to heretics and people who have no regard for The Noble Ones as worthless trash, you can think of it in the same way. I have no...

Re: Slandering buddha

In my opinion, you have missed the gentle humour of WoTF's post i just hope you do not miss the violation of ToS and the unsubstantiated claims. Yes, but I don't share your interpretation. There is a vague reference which I took as light humour, that you are interpreting as "threats of kammic retri...

Re: Faith and Doubt: Why are we quarreling lately?

I posted some of this on another thread, but perhaps it's worth emphasising... On how the Buddha admonishes others. Note that he doesn't speak if it is not beneficial, even if it is correct. The Realized One does not utter speech that he knows to be true and substantive, but which is harmful and dis...

Re: Slandering buddha

I think it might be worth considering the Buddha's advice on speech: The Realized One does not utter speech that he knows to be true and substantive, but which is harmful and disliked by others. The Realized One knows the right time to speak so as to explain what he knows to be true, substantive, an...

Re: Slandering buddha

@ Right view for clarification, sorry Samvara! I disagree. You have overextended your aversion to those who are plagued by skeptical doubt, and worse you used the words of the Buddha to do so. By doing so you create a lot of demerit for yourself, and it could cause you a lot of trouble for a long t...
