Re: Ecology monks in Thailand

Hi Sarath, I think Buddhist monks should spend their time to spread the message to eliminate greed, hatred, and delusion which will protect the forest and many other things. Isn't that what they are doing? Protecting the forest is no different to protect your house. This is not the Buddha's message....

@Mike: I know that what you quoted does not explain anything because I have given a full explanation. Here is a quote from that post: “Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ anantaṃ sabbato pabhaṃ, taṃ pathaviyā pathavattenaananubhūtaṃ, āpassa āpattena ananubhūtaṃ, tejassa tejattena ananubhūtaṃ, vāyassavāyattena ana...

Hi Lal, justinsilva said: Further I noted that you have remarked that Ven. Katukurunde Nanananda thera does not know what vinnana is. I did not mean that in a derogatory way. My sincere apologies if it came that way. Sometimes I try to make a point and can be too direct. That is a flaw I have, and e...

Why don't you read the sutta.
Thanks, DD.
So there is no major difference between those three Sutta.
Am I correct?
Perhaps you could look at those suttas and summarise the similarities and differences for us?

Regarding the post by Mike: ... Thanks, but your reply still appears very Euro/Sri Lankan- centric, so does not really address my point. You would have to do considerably more work to demonstrate that a few European scholars were so influential that they managed to completely mess up the understand...

Re: The Satipatthana Sutta a forgery?

Don't those two suttas group a variety of meditation objects under four headings? Interesting. Could you list them? I'm not sure I understand the question, since the whole sutta is a list of objects. See the headings in this translation, for example: https://accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.010.s...

Re: The Satipatthana Sutta a forgery?

Sorry, I don't understand this statement... Neither do I! I am just stabbing in the dark. :D  My guess is MN 118 take the breath as the meditation object. MN10 and DN22 take four frames of reference as the meditation object. Don't those two suttas group a variety of meditation objects under f...

MN118 about breathing.
Other two about Sati.
You are trying to compare cheese and chalk.
Isn't it?

Hi Lal, Thank you for your interesting input. I really don't have time to read all of what you've written in detail, but I have a small comment about this: A lengthy discussion on atta/anatta started on April 2, 2017, which goes on up to p. #9. On April 16, 2017, I referred to a post at puredhamma.n...

Re: There is no such thing as insight practice. [Was:insight requires access concentration?]

I highly recommend you guys read the book by Kheminda Thera "Way of Buddhist meditation", he and Soma Thera were one of the original translators of the Vimuttimagga. He explains why everyone who enters the noble path, whether faith enterer or dhamma enterer from stream entry to arahant, all require...

Re: Can we apply Yamaka Sutta to Puthujana?

Yamaka Sutta is about the nature of death... of an Arahant. Are you sure it is about the "death" of an Arahant? “As I understand the Buddha’s teaching, a mendicant who has ended the defilements is annihilated and destroyed when their body breaks up, and doesn’t exist after death .” “tathāha...

That could be an interesting question. Take, for example: What do you think, Reverend Yamaka? Do you regard the Realized One as form?” “No, reverend.” “Do you regard the Realized One as feeling … perception … choices … consciousness?” “No, reverend.” https://suttacentral.net/sn22.85/en/sujato#sc8 Wh...

Hi CanadianBuddhist! Does anyone have some details on how to get rid of Makkha (depreciation of another's worth.) in the theravada canon? Basically, I am looking for pali canonical teachings about Makkha and how to overcome it? Thank you! Here is some basic information and some suttas: Dictionary de...
