Re: Can a wholesale dismissal of Non-Theravada traditions result in Ariyupavadantaraya

I quote Dhammanando here as he said that it is not necessarily against a person; Either professing that ariyans don't exist ("There are no good and virtuous samaṇas and brahmins in the world who have realised for themselves by direct knowledge and declare this world and the other world") or else de...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

Ven KN often seems to quote old PTS translations. If you register for Ven Anlayo's course: https://analayo2018.buddhistinquiry.org you'll find his modified PDFs that add other translations and parallels. Thank you for your reply. Registration for the 2018 course closed on 30 April. If you have a mo...

Re: Can a wholesale dismissal of Non-Theravada traditions result in Ariyupavadantaraya

I am neither arguing for or against Zen practice. However, if they are indeed trying to become Buddhas, isn't a Buddha an Ariya? Since your knowledge of Zen practice is limited, why comment on things you don't know about? I am just asking if there is a reason to believe that the 8FNP is at all real...

Re: Can a wholesale dismissal of Non-Theravada traditions result in Ariyupavadantaraya

I have not actually studied much of it but from what little i did learn it seemed like nobody would be developing the 8FNP there, Mahayana in particular. I know even less about Zen. I don't understand your statements, since Chan/Zen/Seon are Mahayana schools: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Budd...

Re: Strong aversion against blue veins

Hi trefobe Secondly, I realised that using aversion doesn't help and that fearfully looking away is not the solution. I therefore started to continue looking at them until my feeling of aversion has grown weaker. I feel that these two methods have already worked to some extent but may either need mo...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

I read Nibbāna Sermon 18, and found a couple of Bhante's translations of important terms in the Nibbānadhātu Sutta are misleading. He has departed from the usual translation of saupādisesā, 'with residue left', and instead uses 'residue with clinging'. ... Ven KN often seems to quote old PTS transl...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

8FNP leads to... the cessation of contact and thus the cessation of feeling and perception... All this is explicitly stated in the Sutta Pitaka. Obviously not. I believe you are talking at cross purposes. Nibbana involves the cessation of contact, etc, but after the nibbana-with-residue the Arahant...

Re: AN 5.39 Putta Sutta. A Child

After the suttas about the duties of children for their parents: 2:33, 3:31, 4:63, we now have a sutta about why parents would want to have a son (Bhikkhu Sujato uses the gender-neutral "child").

Re: Is Dependent Origination about Nama,Rupa or Nama-Rupa?

But I'm not sure how one would tell whether these statements are synchronous or sequential. However, there may well be some indication in the Pali idioms that an expert could discern. I'm referring to the general formula for conditionality in the DO suttas, which describe two modes of conditionalit...
