I know a lot of happy lay Buddhists, the majority married Thai women.

Re: SN 17.35 Attavadha/Pakkanta Sutta. The Discourse on the Departure.

This sutta seems to be a warning to monastics to not become attached to outward signs of success Bhikshus, Devadatta’s gain, honour and praise have arisen for his own destruction. Devadatta’s gain, honour and praise have arisen for his own downfall. This theme occurs in other suttas, e.g. MN 29 “Bhi...

Re: The new SuttaCentral … is coming soon!

It will be great to have a coherent translation of the 4 Nikayas availalble on line (and in print, eventually). There will be all kinds of useful enhancements on the new site. For one, the new translations will have sentence-by-sentence connection between the translation and the Pali, which will be ...

Re: The Buddha displaying sense of humor

Hi dharmacorps. I also liked that the Buddha called one of the first disciples, named "Anya", "Anya Kandanya" which means "Anya understands", because while hearing the fire sermon, Anya became enlightened, and his first words were "Kandanya" (I understand). Nothing outrageous humor-wise, but cute. T...

Re: The Buddha displaying sense of humor

I've seen all sorts of quotes people claim to be humorous & every time I see nothing funny about it whatsoever. I think people might want there to be humor on the Buddha's part a little too strongly... Not even Sujato's collection from the second link I posted above? https://sujato.wordpress.com/20...

Perhaps Namarupa could be a state between pure Nama and Pure Rupa.
I don't understand what you are getting at. What do you mean by a "state" ?

Re: Let's discuss Mount Sineru!

So interpreting the teaching regarding Sineru as a phenomenon perceivable with the divine eye seems totally within reason. But instead of considering this, or any of the other large ranges of interpretations (& there are a lot, because the suttas say very little on this topic, most of the informati...

Why does a comedian go to hell or animal womb?
Because of not being PC enough with his jokes
Do you have a sutta reference for that claim?

Hi No Mind, See: A guide on how to get the most out of your new topics If you give clear parameters for what you want in a thread, then the Moderators can help you keep it on track. For this to be possible takes more work than just posting: I want to know what sutta Y means. If you start with someth...

Re: Mahasi vs General Sutta approach to Training the Four Satipatthanas.

The official basic instructions were the same as the ones found in Mahasi Sayadaws discourses which can be found online (eg: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/mahasi/wheel370.html). Additional instructions are given during personal interviews as my teacher sees fit. I think people asking ...

Re: Mahasi vs General Sutta approach to Training the Four Satipatthanas.

Yes, of course, noting sitting is another popular option... As I said, I don't see any particular significance in any of the details of techniques that people teach. The suttas are vague about technique, but much more clear about what the results should be. Some find using "Buddho", counting breaths...

Re: Mahasi vs General Sutta approach to Training the Four Satipatthanas.

This is, I think, jumping ahead to some rather complex, optional, possibilities, as has been discussed in this thread: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=31105&p=457815#p457815 Mahasi-based teachers are quite diverse, so looking for an "official line" seems pointless to me. Teachers I know...

In what way is dedicated criticism of any religion “Connections to Other Paths?” This thread is not an exploration of the historic connections between Islam and Buddhism or a comparison of the various doctrines held by various Buddhists and Muslims. It seems only to exist to throw up ill-informed a...

Re: Comprehensive Website for Commentaries?

Are there are any websites that offer comprehensive lists of commentaries and subcommentaries alongside the suttas? For instance, Sutta Central but with the option to view commentaries. I'm sure someone here has a site for you but I do know a large majority of the commentaries have never been trans...
