Re: New Translation Project from Sutta Central

Yeah, their main purpose is to make the texts accessible to people that would be pushed back by Bhikkhu Bodhi's and other authors' translations. It's a good goal and why I've stopped expecting different translations from Sutta Central. However, if they add a feature to toggle the technical Pali ter...

Re: New Translation Project from Sutta Central

The final twice-proofread translations of the 4 Nikayas by Bhante @sujato are now live and the draft flag has been removed. In addition, the site should now (of a week or so) be properly indexed by search engines so texts should become Googlable, also URL previews such as on Twitter, Facebook and D...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Why should abandoning sensual pleasures lead to un happiness? Because merely abandoning sensual pleasures does not suffice for happiness. “Even though a disciple of the noble ones has clearly seen as it has come to be with right discernment that sensuality is of much stress, much despair, & greater...

Good for you , but , as you said , you will have to abandon the sensual pleasure first which is denying worldly happiness.
Why should abandoning sensual pleasures lead to unhappiness?

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Since most of my Buddhist friends seem happy, I'd say, they mostly feel happy. The question is whether this happiness of theirs has anything to do with their Buddhist practice. Or is it that they're happy despite their Buddhist practice? For me, and many people I know, it is the former. Taking up a...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

I am happy for them . But , their happiness is not lasting that's why I said not really happy . You mean in some ultimate sense? Well, of course, but that doesn't mean that Dhamma practice doesn't improve happiness in this life. There are plenty of suttas describing that: https://suttacentral.net/a...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Hi James, Sorry I don't really know what you are trying to say here: I did not say no benefit . Only that if Buddhism preach suffering , what is it that in this world is happiness and joyful about . Basically non at the end . Previously you said: Please ask any buddhist with ten or twenty years expe...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Have you ever met someone disrobe after over ten or fifteen years in monkhood ? If they are so happy , no reason to leave the monastic life ! Too many you can find . Or you don't pay attention at all. Of course, I know several people who have disrobed, and some who have rerobed after disrobing... D...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Please ask any buddhist with ten or twenty years experience in Buddhism how they feel ? Before anyone attain any absorption , what joy do they have ? Do you actually know people who have been practising for 20 years without feeling positive effects? I've never met such a person, and I can't imagine...

Re: Any other Black people on Dhammawheel?

The ultimate aim of Buddhist teaching is to eliminate all measurements. (Mana) The overcoming of māna - conceit or pride - is clearly one of the ultimate aims of Dhamma practice. However, māna appears to have no relevance to the activity of organising forums for particular interest groups. Forums e...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

Placing people's particular passions and obsessions on par with Buddhism seems rather perverse, though. It seems to me that people like Hawking pursue their particular quest for truth single mindedly and continuously. One might, of course, argue about whether the particular quest is worthwhile, or ...

Re: Trump and the NHS

This issue of drug prices isn't just a Trump thing, or possibly even a US thing. New Zealand (presumably like the UK) negotiates with drug companies about which drugs will be funded. I recall that the US has objected before that the procedure is anti-competitive (which trade negotiations is code for...

Re: Is Buddhism exclusive ?

But I think you know what I'm talking about. Mathematics doesn't deal with the problem of suffering (which is, for many people, the central problem of human life), whereas Buddhism does. No but mathematics (in common with many areas of knowledge) other does share with Buddhism the ability to comple...

Re: Discussion of Bhikku Ñāṇananda's Nibbana Sermons at Nissarana Vanaya Forest Monastery (Sinhala) .

Yes, that's in the first Nibbana Sermon. Thanks Mike. How can we marry this simile to Dependent origination links, Vinnana and Salayatana? Ven Nananada discusses his interpretation of Dependent Origination in the 33 Nibbana Sermons and a later series on Dependent Origination (also at the link I gav...
