Re: AN 7.63 Bhariyā Sutta. Kinds of Wives.

Comment from Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation: “One who remains patient and calm, when threatened with violence by the rod, [1559] who tolerates her husband with a mind free of hate, patient, submissive to her husband’s will: a wife like this is called a wife and a slave. Note 1559: Vadhadaṇḍatajjitā . M...

AN 7.63 Bhariyā Sutta. Kinds of Wives.

AN 7.63 Bhariyā Sutta. Kinds of Wives. Translated by Bhikkhu Sujato https://suttacentral.net/an7.63 Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the householder Anāthapiṇḍika, where he sat on the seat spread out. Now at that time people in Anāthapiṇḍika...

Re: Theravadin Monks, lay community and depression

Thanks for the perspective, James, But as Ajahn Sujato said trenchantly, "western monasticism is rife with undiagnosed mental illness". So that's another perspective! I've not had a lot of contact with western monastics, but is it possible that westerners taking up the monastic path (or the Buddhist...

Re: Hello, new member

Hi Thearm, Welcome to the Forum! It can be an interesting challenge when you have a strong community, but a lack of English resources. But it is something I found very worthwhile. For some basic reading I'd recommend Bhikkhu Bodhi's selection of suttas, which you can read on-line here: https://dhamm...

Re: Why Believe Commentaries? [From Transfer/Sharing merit limits]

I would agree some translators interfere with a text by dramatically changing the meaning due to their opinion of what it should say rather than what it says. I hope I'm not condemning commentary as a whole for anyone. I'm only calling for a more critical look at them. And, hopefully, at least as c...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Here's the Pali: evameva kho, bhikkhave, yamidaṃ vuccati cittaṃ itipi, mano itipi, viññāṇaṃ itipi, taṃ rattiyā ca divasassa ca aññadeva uppajjati aññaṃ nirujjhati. And some translations: In the same way, that which is called ‘mind’ or ‘sentience’ or ‘consciousness’ arises as one thing and ceases as ...

Re: Why Believe Commentaries? [From Transfer/Sharing merit limits]

why believe either a commentary or a late text? The context of this was about a discussion of the conclusions based on the Theravada Commentaries. However, it might be just as relevant to ask which of the modern interpretations to pay attention to. There are various 20th/21st C commentators...

Re: Ecology monks in Thailand

We know that there are a lot of monks who aren’t naturally talented This is a vicious circle. Why monks are not talented because their teachers are doing social work without guiding and teaching their students. They don't even educate the public. They trying to teach how to save the environment for...

Re: Ecology monks in Thailand

Hi Sarath, I think Buddhist monks should spend their time to spread the message to eliminate greed, hatred, and delusion which will protect the forest and many other things. Isn't that what they are doing? Protecting the forest is no different to protect your house. This is not the Buddha's message....

@Mike: I know that what you quoted does not explain anything because I have given a full explanation. Here is a quote from that post: “Viññāṇaṃ anidassanaṃ anantaṃ sabbato pabhaṃ, taṃ pathaviyā pathavattenaananubhūtaṃ, āpassa āpattena ananubhūtaṃ, tejassa tejattena ananubhūtaṃ, vāyassavāyattena ana...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

Hi Lal, justinsilva said: Further I noted that you have remarked that Ven. Katukurunde Nanananda thera does not know what vinnana is. I did not mean that in a derogatory way. My sincere apologies if it came that way. Sometimes I try to make a point and can be too direct. That is a flaw I have, and e...

Why don't you read the sutta.
Thanks, DD.
So there is no major difference between those three Sutta.
Am I correct?
Perhaps you could look at those suttas and summarise the similarities and differences for us?
