Re: Master of mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn

And JKZ, for example, is advanced in sila like that? I've no idea. But I think you may be identifying a problem that some of these secular techniques seem to jump immediately to a rather advanced form of practice. Of course, there are different levels of "letting go". I think what Spiney quoted was...

Why doesn't the Buddha give this advice to Rahula when he advises him to reflect on the consequences of his actions?
I think because they belong to different levels of development of the gradual path. Good sila is required to develop the calm and insight enabling the letting go...

Re: The great Abhidhamma Pitaka authenticity debate

Mind moment is the mind concept that buddha taught to sāriputta . It is appear in many sāriputta's canon. Also it is the main topic of 1st abhidhamma canon, Dhammasaṅgaṇī.... Of course, one can trace elements of those concepts back to the suttas and abhidhamma. However, statements about billions of...

Re: Buddhism and Islam in Asia: A Long and Complicated History

The OP article looks backwards to the past, to get an idea of the future, Indonesia is the example: https://worldview.stratfor.com/article/indonesia-and-future-islam That looks like a really interesting article, Paul. I'll have to spend some time reading it later. The closing paragraph raises many ...

Re: The great Abhidhamma Pitaka authenticity debate

Abhidhamma asserts that elementary, momentary (& they give a specific amount of time for a moment) phenomena have sabhāva real true nature/existence ... It seems to be a very common error to mix up the Abhidhamma Pitaka and later Comentaries. Mind moments are a much later development than the Abhid...

It would be good to link to the full text, and read the whole passage: https://suttacentral.net/en/pi-tv-bu-vb-pc7 Final ruling 13 ‘If a monk gives a teaching of more than five or six sentences to a woman, except in the presence of a man who understands, he commits an offense entailing confession.’”

The book suggested by Sam Vara did exactly that for me (Bhikkhu Bodhi's In the Buddha's Words).
It's an excellent book.

Re: how to meet buddhist singles

Up until learning this, I've always felt shitty when you'd say how you went to your local temple and just felt good there, while I can't even imagine feeling good there. Well, you had motivations for going there other than the Dhamma, and I don't have such motivations. I had various motivations for...

Try walking in the opposite direction: practice celibacy in body and mind, and women seem to come to YOU. It sucks but this is how it happened for me, the last two times. In a similar vein, when I first started going to a Thai Wat, I already had a Thai girlfriend, but she was in another country. I ...

Perhaps one should inquire if one's intentions are conditioned or unconditioned. ... In brief, the argument (which is probably not particularly original) is that the intention allows us to have some insight into someone's mind, and how the person is likely to behave in the future.
