Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

OK. Thanks for the clarification. Of course, the Visuddhimagga translation was completed and published before Ven Nanamoli's untimely death, but the MN was only in manuscript form a selection of it was published (edited by Bhikkhu Khantipalo) before Bhikkhu Bodhi took up the project. I had not reall...

Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

Yes, it would be nice to have it typed. I'm a little puzzled by your comments about about SN22.59. What is the significant difference you see between the Nanamoli translation here: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn22/sn22.059.nymo.html and Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation https://suttacentra...

Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

Speaking of translations, are there Nanamoli Thera's translations but without Bhikkhu Bodhi's changes/modifications? for example this sutta is purely Nanamoli's, and I find it very helpful and different than other suttas about the 3 characteristics - https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn22...

Re: Bhikkhu Sujato's Four Nikaya translations as Ebooks—October 2018

So kinda like accesstoinsight 2.0. How about vinaya and abhidhamma? Afaik, the ATI translations are far from exhaustive. It would be good if there were complete free translations of the Vinaya & Abhidhamma also. The https://suttacentral.net/ translation of the Pali Vinaya is fairly complete, I thin...

Re: Is meditation bad for you?

2) And if you get into a nice spacey or blissful meditation you can waste a lot of time just enjoying that state. There are a few super-famous Theravada monks who talked about how they wasted a whole decade of their life meditating and enjoying the mild bliss, but not getting anywhere or making any...

Re: Grouping by Disciple and Other Ways to Navigate the Buddhist Texts

Wow, after all these years, how am I just now noticing the index of proper names on ATI?! Sutta Central has an index of names as well. I'm going to be combing through these for awhile. And don't forget the full Dictionary of Pāli Proper Names http://aimwell.org/DPPN/index.html  Mike

Ñāṇananda’s Concept and Reality: An Assessment by Stephen Evans Note: Late Ven. Katukurunde Ñāṇananda (Concept and Reality) and Kiribathgoda Ñāṇānanda (Mahamewnawa) are two different monks. See also the critique of this article, which was discussed this year in Ven Analayo's course on the Nibbana S...

Re: Na Uyana or Mahamevnawa?

Recently I was listening to Ven. Dhamma Subadda from Mithirigala Forest monastery. He participates in the discussion relating to Late Most Ven. Katukurunde Nyanananda Maha Thero's Nibbana sermon. He appears to be a knowledgeable monk. There is no any material on the internet in the English language...

Re: Grouping by Disciple and Other Ways to Navigate the Buddhist Texts

One thing I have always liked about accesstoinsight.com is the references to suttas by subject. If I am dealing with a difficult issue, I will often have trouble finding a sutta which references something specific-- e.g., dealing with illness, difficult people, etc. I would like to see more organiz...

Re: Star Water Blessing...

Yes, well we do sometimes see a view expressed that anything not in the canonical texts and early commentaries is not "Theravada". This, in my opinion, undervalues the richness of the living tradition...

Re: Star Water Blessing...

Is this a Theravada Buddhist ritual? I've never heard of it. :anjali: Theravada Buddhist rituals are many and varied... Phra Mae Thorani is intimately connected with the "touching the earth" iconography, and the universal ritual of pouring water during a blessing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phra...

Re: Dhamma as Phenomena

How does one know when dhamma as phenomenon refers to mental states or refers to anything? See this post, which gives links to various usages in the SN and MN: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=5584#p422383 The short answer to your question is that it is quite obvious in the Pali sentenc...

Re: Should monks sacrifice their life to protect Buddhism?

Hi Sarath, His argument was that King Ajasattu did not go to hell even if he had done a heinous karma because he helped to establish the Sasana. There are many people commit suicide for sensual gratification and why monks can't do a little sacrifice to protect Pariyatti. His line of Argument was not...
