Re: Slandering buddha

It'd be a disservice to truth seekers and also a disservice to the person making the false claim not to be corrected, and remember: bring a mind that isn't afraid of admonishment to the board, admonishment that leads to good practice and course correction is good. I agree, but it really depends on ...

Re: Does the cause for craving is feeling ?

I hope Mike or others weigh in on this question. Ha! I wish I knew how to give up ignorant tendencies... Just stop trying to do something about them. It is your effort and energy that you give to resistance and trying to change yourself that is the only problem. :D Ha, very funny... :jumpi...

Is it not that upekka is the neutral feeling.
If not , what is this neutral feeling?
No, it's not upekka (equanimity), it's adukkhamasukhāya, often translated as "neither pleasant nor painful".

Re: Does the cause for craving is feeling ?

How does one give up ignorant tendency with regard to neutral feeling ?! I hope Mike or others weigh in on this question. Ha! I wish I knew how to give up ignorant tendencies... Here are a few clues: “Pleasant feeling is pleasant when it remains and painful when it perishes. Painful feelin...

Re: Strong aversion against blue veins

@ mikenz66 & pilgrim Why do you think that it is more helpful to focus on the aversive reaction instead of the object of aversion? Do you recommend to look away from the stimulus (veins) and focusing on the aversive reaction or to continue to look at them but focus on the aversive reaction simultan...

Re: How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?

A gentle reminder that the topic is: "How is Mahasi not a samatha practice?" As several of us have said "dry" is somewhat confusing characterisation of such practices, since insight requires, according to the commentaries, to develop the jhana factors to access-concentration level. And that is what ...

Re: Does the cause for craving is feeling ?

It might be helpful to look at the analyses here for more details. And what is craving? There are these six classes of craving. Craving for sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts. This is called craving. And what is feeling? There are these six classes of feeling. Feeling born of cont...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

Ven KN's Sermon would not have changed. The addition is by Ven Analayo. Keep in mind that the sermons were given in Sinhala 30 years ago and translated (by him) and recorded ten years or so later. Ven Analayo then transcribed them. Ven Analayo mentioned last year that the English translations Ven KN...

Re: Five stages of Rupajjhana

The Abhidhamma (or the commentaries, I'm not sure where) divides the second (I think) rupa jhana into two, giving five altogether. Take a look at the first entry here: https://dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=826 Bhikkhu Bodhi's A Comprehensive Manual of the Abhidhamma: The Abhidhammatthasangaha...

Re: Can a wholesale dismissal of Non-Theravada traditions result in Ariyupavadantaraya

I quote Dhammanando here as he said that it is not necessarily against a person; Either professing that ariyans don't exist ("There are no good and virtuous samaṇas and brahmins in the world who have realised for themselves by direct knowledge and declare this world and the other world") or else de...

Re: Is the idea that Nibbāna is seen at each of 4 stages of awakening canonical?

Ven KN often seems to quote old PTS translations. If you register for Ven Anlayo's course: https://analayo2018.buddhistinquiry.org you'll find his modified PDFs that add other translations and parallels. Thank you for your reply. Registration for the 2018 course closed on 30 April. If you have a mo...
