Re: How to use Pali Canon reference numbers?

It seems to be reasonably recent. It would be great if it were implemented on Sutta Central itself. It might be worth doing some lobbying...

Re: What is the difference between Citta and Vinnana?

Sure, you can view them as synonyms, but they seem to be used in different ways in the suttas, and understanding the how and why of those differences might be significant and useful terms of how you practice. Its not straightforward though. Sometimes different words mean the same thing in different...

Re: How to use Pali Canon reference numbers?

There is a nice converter here: http://pts.ticao.de/ that takes you directly to the Pali or the English translations on Sutta Central.

Re: What is the basis of sutta numbering?

What is the basis (who gave these numbers?) of sutta numbering? As Volo says, the sutta numbers are based on dividing the texts up into suttas. This is straightforward for the DN and MN, so MN 10 will always mean the Satipatthana Sutta, for example. But in the SN and AN it is not so clear how to gr...

Re: How to see dependent origination in meditation?

Yep. Also if you listen to Ayya Khema's talks or read Gunaratana's books, both over the course of their lives shifted away from Vissudhimagga definitions and moved towards sutta based jhanas. I think the terms "Visuddhimagga Jhana" and "Sutta Jhana" are rather confusing, since interpreters such as ...

Re: What is the difference between Citta and Vinnana?

Well, yes, that's one of these points of controversy... The sutta teaching appears plain enough. I think it is not correct to deem every obvious wrong view as a "controversy". It may seem plain enough to you, but many would disagree with the idea of an "eternal citta", though it seems to be popular...

Hmm, the problem was that I'm failing to resolve www.dhammatalks.net from my computer. I checked on my phone and it works, so it's just some glitch... Thanks for the link!

Re: How to see dependent origination in meditation?

You can't analyze anything if your actually in jhana, from what I've read. That comes after you come out. Not according to the suttas that were posted on the first page of this thread. Of course, that's one of these controversial points. Bhikkhu Analayo, for example, has a nice discussion of the va...

Re: What is the difference between Citta and Vinnana?

The third noble truth appears to refer to the cessation of craving rather than the cessation of citta. Well, yes, that's one of these points of controversy... However, the point is that in the suttas there are these various terms that are used in different contexts, even though they have a large ov...

Re: What is the difference between Citta and Vinnana?

... Depends on context. ... I think that this is they key to making sense of the various expositions in the suttas. There is an understandable tendency to try to interpret the suttas as if they were conceived as a consistent "text book", and therefore to look for exact correspondences. The abhidham...

Re: What is the difference between Citta and Vinnana?

There are some useful observation here: https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/citta-mano-vinnana-definitions-and-distinctions/4254/2 While there have been many attempts to show that these are either the same or different, in my view that is missing the point somewhat. The terms are, generally speakin...

Re: In the Buddha's Words - Bhikkhu Bodhi's dhamma talks

Hello. I found a website with a series of dhamma talks by Bhikkhu Bodhi that were based on his book "In the Buddha's Words". But it seems that the dhamma talks were extracted from a CD, which makes me think this material might be copyrighted. I'd like to know if this series of talks is freely avail...

Re: The mindfulness conspiracy

Yes, my point is that Purser has indeed read a theory into what he is investigating, and that theory happens to be derived from the work of Marx. ... Thanks for the clarification. I guess Marx still matters to some people from the left and right (either to argue for or against)... Mike

Re: The mindfulness conspiracy

The shortcomings are blindingly obvious, for sure, but my point is that the political discourse used to discuss those shortcomings is invariably informed by Marxist theory. ... Political discourses in circles who think those theories are useful use them, sure. But it all seems rather quaint and irr...
