Re: Self-love
From AN 4:67: May footless beings do me no harm. May two-footed beings do me no harm. May four-footed beings do me no harm. May many-footed beings do me no harm. May all creatures, all breathing things, all beings —each & every one— meet with good fortune. May none of them come to any evil. All...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
Greetings, And further to venerable Dhammanando's point above, I'm sure those who were committed first and foremost to the teachings of the Sutta Pitaka had more than enough to contend with, simply in memorizing, reciting and transmitting the suttas. Metta, Paul. :) Theres one thing that Bhante Suj...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
So why do we have this thing called EBT now? Surely scholars have been doing the same research for centuries.

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
I remember reading Prof. Ian Stevenson's works where he gave several incidents which clearly prove the relation of past actions and birth defects. He even managed to find the records of court cases as proof of past memories and birth defects. Perhaps, Bhante Sujato doesn't like the Biblical idea of...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
Monks, possessing forty qualities one is cast into purgatory . . . he takes life himself, encourages another to do so, approves of taking life, and speaks in praise of thereof . . ." Anguttara Nikaya 10. 213 As I already distinguished, sutta discourses (apart from MN 135) appear to be about ho...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
But it's not just in MN 135 as others have noted, see also RobertK's posts They sound like later texts. I am not denying to past-life frenzy obviously become very popular; probably under King Ashoka. This looks interesting, what evidence do you have this emerged under King Ashoka? Is Doodoot saying...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
Do you think bhande Sujato should outright stop drawing from later Buddhist text in his teachings, it's damn right confusing. He quotes them all the time to explain Buddhism or get his point across, but others times he saids.. oh no no that an a later text we can't accept that. I think its good to b...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
He also says collective karma's are a myth and birth defects are not created by karma . I remember reading Prof. Ian Stevenson's works where he gave several incidents which clearly prove the relation of past actions and birth defects. He even managed to find the records of court cases as proof of p...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
Well the normal way kamma is presented makes more sense. So how do you come to understand the way Sujato presents it?

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
This I can understand, just listening to some of the questions he faces from the students, it doesn't take much to upset them i.e hinting an animal rebirth is lower, I cant imagine if Sujato told them getting abused as a child is all their own fault. Yes, but it is not their own fault. You seem to ...

Re: Bhante Sujatos and karmic snobbery.
In Sujato's talk he said its ok to criticize monks. I have few doubts that Sujato understands the True Dhamma very well but most Theravada monks (including Sujato) engage in social political correctness in respect to teaching Buddhism. Sometimes they will teach a certain way; other times another wa...
