Re: giving alms to monk that has committed pārājika

The person in the video is not an ordained monk, he is a Japanese priest. In Japan these priests can marry, and they have not been ordained as monks or taken the vow of celibacy that those seeking to live the holy life take.

Re: Can monks ever eat what they want?

How can they eat what they like? I thought they cannot buy food. Can they (in Thailand)? :namaste: No, they take a vow not to use money, and also they cannot store up food, or prepare it for themselves. The food has to be donated. In some instances, however, they have a lot available at a given mea...

Re: Can monks ever eat what they want?

How do western monks cope with this massive change in lifestyle? Can they ever eat what they want .. suppose they have terrible craving for chocolate ice cream one day .. or even plain lasagna .. how do they cope .. Their mind should be in the right place, in so far as they realise that craving for...

If you have tried something called Mindfulness, thumbs up or thumbs down? I’m taking a survey here, Dharmawheel, and on a Zen forum. Thanks!

Re: Finding Mahasi Sayadaw Meditation difficult

Yes, that's how it is taught. I would advise anyone trying any approach to read/listen to the instructions carefully. Just grabbing a paragraph from here or there is unlikely to be much use. When I started this approach, I think it took a couple of months to actually be following the movements, as ...

Re: Finding Mahasi Sayadaw Meditation difficult

Does anyone else here find the Mahasi Sayadaw style of meditation difficult? I've tried doing the walking meditation where you note everything like lifting the heel, lifting the foot, moving the foot, touching the foot, placing the foot. I find that it's just too much to track and it's actually kin...

Dhammakaya is like our own attachment, it is always trying to grow and attach onto everything.

Re: Why does happiness never last?

Hello everyone, While this is a fundamental truth in buddhism. I would like to know why this is? I have noticed that we often think when I buy a new car I'll be happy when I buy a new house I'll be happy when I go on vacation I'll be happy but after a while this happiness vanishes and does not last...

Re: The Six Stages or Divisions of Dhamma

Thanks. Yes, I was a bit worried that I may be inventing something of my own, but it is all combining from the various valid categorisations that I listed in the beginning of the first message. I am not adding something new, I hope. Just organising it, and it was intended for personal purposes, so ...

Re: The Six Stages or Divisions of Dhamma

I like Buddha's division of the three trainings. It is in some suttas such as The Sekhin Sutta: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an03/an03.085.than.html Other suttas describe it as a condensation of the EFP. What you are saying seems accurate though, even though I don't think all Noble One...

Re: Monastic Life: Rules Regarding Food & Money (advice appreciated)

I am sure others can provide more specific details but as fat as I know a monk cannot handle money himself, nor can he have someone handle it for him, however, if you wish to donate money for a monk to use as he needs it, it is allowable to give the money to someone who will handle it in the monks i...

Re: Trusting in god

God: you have been a very bad boy, you are sentenced to hell Boy: is this how you get your kicks? I suppose we should abolish all prisons? Because after all, punishment is somehow wrong? So you approve of and wish to worship a God who creates beings who are flawed and bound to commit sin or wrongdo...
