Re: How to talk to people about buddhism the right way?

That's what I'm asking... How to go about helping people 'the right way'. Most immediately: By not adding to their problems. Such as by not teaching them counterfeit Dharma. :goodpost: Umm, silly question: What is counterfeit Dharma? I don't understand how me telling someone about Buddhism; giving ...

Re: How to talk to people about buddhism the right way?

I would add that none of us are perfect teachers but we should still do our bit. My background is Nichiren Buddhism so I come here with that mindset - you can agree or disagree, doesn't make a difference to me - We all have a roll to play in world peace. And it's precisely because it "doesn't ...

Re: How to talk to people about buddhism the right way?

Just who do you think you are to others? Brahma's gift to the world? LOL. We all have a responsibility to spread the Dharma and relieve suffering. It's the Bodhisattva ideal. (yes, I know that's more of a Mahayana principle but I think everyone should do their best to make the world a better place ...

parallels between psychological addiction and Taṇhā?

I've been reading Allen Carr's book 'stop drinking now' in which he helps people break free from psychological dependence to alcohol by dispelling the illusions which keep you believing you 'need' a drink. As I'm reading it I'm seeing many parallels between his method and the Buddha's lessons on suf...

There's no point in proselytising, it just turns people off. .
Seems like good advice, guys.

Thanks :)

Re: How to talk to people about buddhism the right way?

OK, so you're saying that people don't realize how bad things are? How does someone help people do that? I suppose the four noble truths Yes, but if I go and talk to any of my friends about the four noble truths the first thing they'd say would most likely be: "I'm not religious" briefly ...

How to talk to people about buddhism the right way?

I'm quite passionate about Buddhism and so often talk to my friends about it but some people don't want to know (for lack of a better phrase). I was wondering if there are any sutta's written on the topic of introducing Buddhism to people without being imposing? Or anyone with personal life experien...

Re: questions on continuity of beings?

Rebirth is part of mundane right view. It’s conductive for morality. Well if it's not correct then wouldn't it be better to find a way of practicing right view? To find better reasons to practice morality? What do you mean by “not correct”? As I said, it’s a concept to use and see through. The same...

Re: questions on continuity of beings?

If you investigate into the cause of your questions you will find out that these are rooted in self views. I mentioned on the Mahayana forum, dharmawheel.net, my position that rebirth is not essential to Dharma - that it's beside the point. I was promptly told I'd discarded the Dharma. LOL. Rebirth...

Re: questions on continuity of beings?

So, my questions are these: what conserves character traits and the unity of the continuity? Why should there be "character traits and the unity of the continuity"? Why don't we dissolve like waves into the ocean? And how is the information from the previous life retained into the next li...
