Re: Diversity among mods

What's scary is we have a Buddhist forum, which traditionally in the West has been supported by liberal patrons, where most of the moderation decisions are made by conservatives, some very much so, that's not just political, its also goes into the interpretations of Buddhist Philosophy, and as a lo...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

I would imagine that a sotapanna, being possessed of a somewhat constant understanding of the impermanence of things, would be able to get over things quickly. Such a person would likely be too happy and too detached to have the amount of strong hatred needed to intentionally kill someone. Similar ...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

if we look at the question in this way, then we get some unsavory results. whether or not a stream winner would or wouldn't do something, is the removal of a tapeworm killing, which it seems to be (me, googling 'how to get rid of tapeworms without killing them' lol) it would be better to actually g...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

ok, i have suttas to support my view if i need to go get them, and that is a wikipedia article? doesnt say those are 6 defining criteria, just that sotāpanna wouldnt do them, which is obvious because confirmed confidence and also commitment to non-killing It was the easiest link to find, they say t...

Re: What would a sotapanna do?

Now, for example, a deadly worm is in the stomach of a sotapanna's child. The only thing to help his child is to kill the worm otherwise his child will die. With his perfect morality, what would a sotapanna do, will a sotapanna (naturally) let his child die? Suttas posit, that a stream-winner can't...

but shied away from answering why he (or she) does not lecture his (or her) neighbours who drive a 24 valve 3.5 liter 214 cubic inch 450 horsepower SUV to kid's soccer game.
Only problem I find with that is being an SUV instead of a sedan.

Re: Diversity among mods

It's a worthwhile idea, though I'm not sure how practical it would be. They do this at some other forums. AFAIK, the sister forum, DharmaWheel, has such a system (although since that forum has many more active members than this one, it's probably easier to have such a system in place). Mahayana is ...

Re: Buddhism as a supra-national, supra-racial religion?

The law of gravity or of thermodynamics works the same is asia or in europe, despite europeans inventing it. The way this world works is the same no matter the person who discovered it. If Buddhism is correct, then it can be proven that it is so through debate, while other philosophies such as mater...

Re: Which Senior Theravada monks should ideally discuss and explore with each other over which topics?

During Buddha times, every village had a Debating Hall and monks were trained for being good in debates. Having monks good in debates was one of the 5 things Buddha enumerated every time there came the question if weather he should die or not. Unfortunatelly english culture it totally different from...

Re: Diversity among mods

As far as diversity is concerned, what possibly could make a difference is if there would be more turnover among the moderators, ie. that someone could be a moderator only for a limited amount of time specified in advance. It seems this could go a long way in undoing the impression that there are t...

Re: Americas new segregationists are on the left.

Sometimes I'm happy I live in eastern europe. At least this kind of stupidity is not part of my life. It would be a source of stress to go through collage and encounter that kind of trash or see that kind of trash on TV all the time. It's causing me stress simply reading about it on the internet.

All 4 parties there are using those toyota trucks. Assad, the Kurds and the Rebels are using the same toyota trucks too. If they could control that, they would not let Assad have toyota trucks. These things are hard to control. You put a muslim from USA to buy a toyota truck in personal name, then s...

You even complain about USA being allies with such backwards countries and doing nothing to reform them. When it comes to Iran, you are against the segment of the population from urban areas that ...

Re: Wars & International Geopolitics

When it comes to Saudi Arabia, Sharia Law is bad. When it comes to Iran, Sharia law is great and it's the evil cultural marxist that don't understand "great islamic morality". How can one criticize sharia law but then change his mind and start doing apologetics for sharia law in the same topic ? Doi...
