Re: Why are you practising Buddhism?
I started off practising to try and improve myself, to be an easier person to live with, and to find some peace. Now after nearly 3 years in total, I’m not so sure. The goal in the Nikayas isn’t the worldly improvements above, but even though I can say the goal is Cessation Of Existence, I’m not re...

Re: Why are you practising Buddhism?
In my experience doing non Buddhist stuff is a hell of a lot easier, and what got me in a mess in the first place! I've never been able to convince myself that the proverbial eating, drinking, and making merry is the way to go. I've tried very hard to convince myself that it is, but to no avail. It...

That’s how I feel at the moment, but it SEEMS even practicing is giving the same results right now.

Re: Television non-watchers - have you noticed positive effects?
Yes, less ‘views’ about worldly current affairs which only led to suffering for myself. I used to flick between some nonsense online, but have reduced that to checking soccer news and job searching (both of these are a waste of time), and I am working on eradicating these and focusing 100% on Buddhi...

Re: Renunciation of family life
That’s true enough! It’s a difficult one to understand, as I’m not sure to what level the ties are cut with their children/ family. Would a monk attend his daughters wedding for example, or help if their son suffered a breakdown? Or would these be the instances of proscribition you mentioned. Would...

Re: Renunciation of family life
Hi Sam, that’s interesting, you don’t hear about it at all. A lot of people in the West would likely view it as some sort of abandonment of family depending on the circumstances I guess.

Renunciation of family life
Are there any stories of Western lay people renouncing and ordaining when their children have grown and left home?

Re: What is resistance (patigha)?
Hi Aflatun, I’ve not read as much as you, you’ve probably seen it, but in case you missed it, the questions and answers at the back of ‘Meanings’ by Ven. N.Namaoli on Resistance and Desigantion (P416), offer a good explanation; “Resistance and Designation (R&D) could be described using ‘behaviou...

Re: What is resistance (patigha)?
Ven. Nanananda says in Nibbana- The Mind Stilled; “"Where name and form As well as resistance and the perception of form Are completely cut off, It is there that the tangle gets snapped." The reference here is to Nibbāna. It is there that the tangle is disen- tangled. The coupling of name-...

Sorry for my ignorance regarding the Vinaya but I want ensure I do not insult any Monks. Can a Monk be asked and give the answer if they have any preference of books that they would like to read, with the idea to send some books out? Otherwise how would one know what to send? How does this apply the...
