Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

For the curious, the limit, in a 500g (roughly one pound jar) is 150 insect fragments. They are allowed 5 rodent hairs in there too. [puts fingers in ears]LALALALALALALAA I can't hear you LALALALALALAL[/puts fingers in ears] Speaking as one who works as a quality professional, I'd be interested to ...

Re: Poll: Are you vegetarian/vegan?

Calculations show that the amount of food necessary to raise a calf from birth to slaughter weight would feed me (a typical male) from birth to age 75. That's one head of cattle. Holy crap. I thought that I was somewhat versed in these kinds of statistics, but for some reason I've never heard that ...

Re: What is holding you back from ordaining?

I have 2 things that hold me back from becoming a monk of some stripe: 1)Family obligation: I have a wife and 2 fairly young kids; my interest in Buddhist teachings didn't really sink in 'til just the last couple of years. 2)I'm still figuring out my path. I'm focusing on teachers rather than school...

Re: Twitter....what is it?

I currently subscribe to BuddhistGeeks, SmartBuddhist, aquietmind, and tinybuddha; sometimes a nugget of wisdom or a link to a good dharma read comes through. :) I also follow the feed of a friend that is battling cancer, cnn headline news, and tech news feeds, and find each to be worthwhile. What i...

Re: The secret to a successful meditation session

I've never had a "pre-meditative" ritual, but as a result of this thread I've begun experimenting with doing a brief metta prior to sitting. First impressions are that I start in a "clearer" place, if that makes any sense.

Re: Daniel Ingram

I've read his book, and have lurked at the forum. (http://www.dharmaoverground.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) He does manage to be a controversial figure; he does indeed consider himself to be an arhant, and others who have followed in his footsteps at the site will ov...

Re: Girl Scouts

I agree with this. With many things in life, creating a roadmap for your kids (what profession you want to steer them towards, what kind of person you want them to marry, and surely, what religion you want them to be) strikes me as a recipe for epic failure. I have two daughters, 8 and 10; very brig...

Re: Practicing with no sangha

I'm not yet sure about where it's going...but I'm a bit intrigued with the Second Life Buddhist centers that have sprung up. The only ones I've sampled are actually in the Zen tradition, but it's interesting to take your avatar to a dharma talk, and "sit" with other people in that setting....

Re: Anyone read books on a handheld device?

Honestly, I read mostly fiction on my iPhone, though I do keep a Kindle copy of The Miracle of Mindfulness on there to save me when I need a Buddha blast. Though I am very open to new tech, I still buy my dharma books as physical copies. I think it's because I know that I may want to refer back to t...

Re: Anyone read books on a handheld device?

This amazes many people, but I read a lot on my iPhone. The free Kindle app means that I can select, buy, and be reading a new book from Amazon in under a minute. Ultra-portable, so I have it with me at all times. I turn down the brightness a bit to prevent straining my eyes. I turn up the font to n...

Re: Noting and labeling practice

I am in a similar place, figuratively speaking. I use the noting technique in my vipassana practice, and when doing simple tasks around the work and home..but when trying to deal with an upset 10-year-old, a wild lab pup, or when debugging Visual Basic code, it gets a little tricky.

Re: Girl Scouts

The Scouting experience will vary widely, depending on the leader and the group..my own time in the Boy Scouts (30 years ago) involved nothing that was overtly or forcibly religious, and certainly nothing that was paramilitary. Churches tend to be the hosts for Scout troops in my area, and I suppose...

I did choose that, and no criticism to you was intended. :)
