Yes, that's the spirit. America doesn't need to be seen as the best country in the world in order to have our respect and gratitude.

Re: Theistic Belief/Believing in God/Buddhas and Bodhisattvas

My point in mentioning prayer to buddhas and bodhisattvas is that there's practicality nothing in other religions that Buddhism doesn't also offer. If you want to feel a connection to a power larger than yourself, Buddhism has that available to you.

Re: I am thankful to be an American

I am thankful that America was founded as a nation for all peoples, regardless of color or creed. When the Pilgrims landed in 1620, of course Native Americans were already here. But Africans, too, were already here, having arrived in Florida in 1528 and Virginia in 1619. Latinos, too, were long pres...

Re: A Libertarian Icon’s Descent Into Racist Pseudoscience

Yes, my point is that "white supremacist" is used inflationary as a slur without much felt need for substantiation or clear definition or qualification of what exactly is "supremacist" about this or that person or statement or direction of thought etc. Judging by the content of your lengthy respons...

Re: Unity Church/Unitarian Church/Centers for Spiritual Living

Another religious organization I forgot to mention, which attempts to encompass all religions, is the Bahai faith. There was a time when I was considering to become a Bahai, but I didn't feel comfortable meeting in a stranger's house, rather than an actual church building. Another reason why I didn'...

Re: Buddha and Mahavira

Yes, I agree with this and also why not follow those signs and road-maps the Buddha gave us. If someone knows the way from point A to point B and has a road-map, why not use it? Sure, we could wander around aimlessly for years and we might find it, but if there's a much easier and efficient way, it...

The Anti-Defamation League reflected the universally accepted definition of white supremacist, in the quote I provided, unless one happens to be a white supremacist.

Re: the great vegetarian debate

I just thought of something that could drastically improve America's health, especially for low-income people: Fruits and vegetables should cost less for people on food stamps. Grocery stores could even be reimbursed at the normal amount, while incentivizing low-income people to eat healthier foods...

If I learned the Buddha never existed, it would be a bigger disappointment than when I learned Cool Runnings wasn't actually a true story:

Re: Buddha and Mahavira

I agree - and the Mahavira stuff/Jain similarities kind of freaks me out. It doesn't keep me up at night, especially considering that Buddhism is a much larger and more successful religion, while Jainism is a much more restrictive religion and more limited in its appeal. Jainism makes me wonder why...

Re: Buddha and Mahavira

There is no claim made that you can enter Nirvana because Buddha did. Buddhism is, as a religion, rooted in the Buddha's experience of enlightenment, which led him to teach the path to enlightenment. It has never seen itself as ahistorical. Even the Mahayana sutras, which are believed to have been ...

Re: Buddha and Mahavira

If the Buddha never existed, but the teachings and practice did, it would have very little effect on the truth or falsity of Buddhism. If the Buddha did not, as a historical person, attain Nirvana, what hope do we have to attain Nirvana ourselves? Exactly the same as you had before. No, because the...

Re: A Libertarian Icon’s Descent Into Racist Pseudoscience

White supremacist is not a term I use lightly. I never call someone a white supremacist without evidence of their views. So, I ask again: What is, by your definition, a white supremacist? White supremacy is a term used to characterize various belief systems central to which are one or more of the f...
