Re: Meditation experience

I believe we learn more through loss of pleasure more than through gain of pain. In other words, positive reinforcement. Just look at people who go boxing or do MMA, or look at women who go through the pain of pregnancy several times. Humans are very good at adapting to pain. But humans are terribl...

Re: Meditation experience

Dear friends, as I enter the next phase of my life, I will have more time for meditation. I hope you can share your experiences about meditation. Your success and "failures". What worked for you and what didn't. Hopefully this Info can help me and others who are interested in meditation. Thanks I r...

Re: The right to cause offense

Are you saying that the results of action is incidental? What is the relationship between your quote and what I have written? I'm saying that though no offence can be taken if none is given, even if offence is given, none need be taken. I agree entirely with the main thrust of your argument (i.e. t...

Re: The right to cause offense

The idea that the results of action is incidental is not consistent with the Buddha's teaching. For example Parajika 3 is dependant on the end result that murder is completed. "In the same way, brahman, that with which you have insulted me, who is not insulting; that with which you have taunted me,...

Re: The right to cause offense

I would say one cannot cause offense in others, as people are usually looking to be offended, thus causing themselves to be offended. If someone says something wrong or foolish, I'm not offended as what they're saying has nothing to do with me, even if they make comments about my person. All I can ...

Mara comes, and puts on a little play for us. We don't need to sit and watch it.

Re: Against the stream centers shutting down

It really sounds like he has done nothing wrong. How is one supposed to know that someone doesn't like what one is doing if they give no indication of it? That said, like all men in such positions, Noah really should know how to protect himself from such after-the-fact accusations, particularly as t...

Nanananda talks about this sutta in Concept and Reality - I'll find the passage later.

So much for not discussing politics.
Indeed. But this all has a bearing on Sila. Specifically, 'nature vs nurture', and the expression thereof has a bearing on what exactly it is that Sila is correcting.

Re: Slavic Buddhism vs Western Buddhism

Racism and intolerance are expressions, behavioural constructions on the basis of innate human qualities and features, such as in-group psychology and fear of the unfamiliar, As such I don't see any need to distinguish them specifically from any other expression of nastiness, as they all spring fro...

Re: Slavic Buddhism vs Western Buddhism

1: Doubt it. Cruelty and nastiness are built into people (based on how people have behaved in all places and times, and continue to behave all around us, in all cultures), and require training in order not to be expressed. Hence sila. 2: Definitely not the case. Simple googling will show you much m...

Re: Slavic Buddhism vs Western Buddhism

Personal labels inevitably lead to quarrels. There are no "Slavs", all of whom would have the same attitude. There are no standard "Westerners". There are no "racists", - just specific actions or statements concerning other people or races. Personal labels immediately lead to misunderstandings, sin...
