Re: Reading Mahayana books

Mahayana teachings have Bastardized my practice. What I mean is, I've definitely become a mix of the two. Pulling this and that from where it makes sense. I used to believe they were two sides of the same coin, but as I've moved between the two I have noticed a marked difference in tone and spirit. ...

Re: Are the asavas the default state of mind?

Whatever is going on in the mind is the state of the mind. You're getting too caught up in this is this, this is that, and defining things. Stop theorizing, and just focus on what is. What is the default state of a tree? What is the default state of the ocean? Things are what they are.

Re: Meditating When Going to Sleep

I meditate as I am falling asleep, so I can speak to this. I hesitated for the longest time because I was worried that if I meditated as I was about to fall asleep, I would get sleepy when practicing normal, regular, sitting or walking meditation. That didn't happen, so no worries there (at least fo...

Re: No objections to Livelihood by Archery?

"Herein, Vyagghapajja, by whatsoever activity a householder earns his living, whether by farming, by trading, by rearing cattle, by archery, by service under the king, or by any other kind of craft — at that he becomes skillful and is not lazy. He is endowed with the power of discernment as to the ...

Re: Why are we trying to protect religion?

I don't try to protect Buddhism. The Buddha said it will eventually dissappear, and then another Buddha will come along. It's a natural thing, so I let it go. Clinging to "Buddhism" just creates suffering, or so I have experienced. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I feel. :goodpost: Well put! There ...

Re: Sexual misconduct

Cutting out Porn is difficult, although I wouldn't say I'm addicted. You do start to feel really sleazy and f*** up after enough days of watching, especially if you're into something rough. If, like me, you aren't ready to swear a vow of Chastity or stop masturbating, mostly instead of porn just try...

Re: keep liberalism out of buddhism

Just because the world is filled with ignorance, and this ignorance causes women to be seen as inferior, doesn't mean we should just go along with the idea. We are seeking to remove ignorance, not submit to it. Also, if the core message of the text isn't lost, then why does it matter if we use he or...

Re: Suburbia - stupidest development in modern history ?

I just have to say, living in Michigan, Grand Rapids is a great city! Night clubs, sports arenas, tall (relatively) buildings! Fancy hotels, a vast diversity in dining establishments. Museums. Theaters. A real, genuine city. Decently busy. It is not just houses. Sorry sir, you are wrong. America has...

Re: Survivalism and Dhamma

It's all about why you are prepping; If you are worried about yourself and preventing death, I think that is definitely counter to Buddhist principals. If you are doing it for others to ease their fears of the future then I think that is compassion and it is perfectly within the realm of buddhism. O...

I always thought it was a low thing to do. If he did just sneak off in the night, it was pretty cowardly and selfish in the moment.

Re: How to live the three dhamma seals?

I've always preferred to think of Not-self as interdependence. When you look at everything as a great chain of causes and conditions, impermanence follows naturally. Curiosity is a HUGE asset when it comes to practice. When you look closely at things blades of grass, rivers, the way trees move in th...
