Re: How to live the three dhamma seals?

I've always preferred to think of Not-self as interdependence. When you look at everything as a great chain of causes and conditions, impermanence follows naturally. Curiosity is a HUGE asset when it comes to practice. When you look closely at things blades of grass, rivers, the way trees move in th...

Re: Sunlun Sayadaw method

I sometimes use a breathing method similar to this to wake up when groggy. Its also good for making yourself feel euphoric. Actually, whim Hoff and Tibetan Buddhists have some pretty interesting breathing methods too. Give them a try, it might be a bit of wasted time, but of you plug it in to a time...

Re: Meditation as a Partial Alternative to Sleep

I get at most 5hrs of sleep a night because of my work schedule. I find a good solid block of meditation on waking up really helps.

Welcome to Dhamma wheel, Buddhism will remake your world, if you let it. It takes time and hard work, but it is worth it.

Re: Muhammad - Worthy of respect?

This is a fun question to consider if you take a moment to stop considering Muhammad as some barbaric Muslim "other" and just sit with it for a while.

Also, I hate to point this out but Respect is much like Self, variable, a matter of opinion, and entirely dependent on who is asking.

Re: Islamophobia - A nonsense term?

I don't understand why you're thinking all Muslims are to be feared just because some are terrorists is rational. Some minorities are criminals, so lets fear ALL minorities. Not Rational. Some white guys are White supremacists so lets fear ALL white guys. Not Rational. Some dogs bite, so lets fear ...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

Copy-paste where I said that. I'm searching for it, but can't find it. If I remember correctly, It was in a thread where this kid was going on about how his anxiety medication had really helped, and you started going off on him for using it, saying it was a crutch. That you'd suffered a lot, dealt ...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

There is no primary self. Just the blood, tissue, bone, cells, and mind that make up this particular creature. You can try to go on about self not existing and therefore there being no one to achieve anything, but we both know (Or should know) that this semantics. /.../ And I'm not teaching anyone ...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

So many many many of you don't understand dispassion at all. Thank the gods that we have you, to passionately teach us dispassion! There is no primary self. Just the blood, tissue, bone, cells, and mind that make up this particular creature. You can try to go on about self not existing and therefor...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

Apathy is looking at something with bored indifference and not caring. I see the world just as it is and choose to accept it. Why should I fear something that is an integral part of the universe? Rebirth is the way it is for all who have not achieved Enlightenment. It is like fearing the heat of fir...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

What is the danger? We doubt, we end up in hell or as an animal. These things are the way it is. It will be extremely unpleasant. So is breaking my leg, or getting cancer, or burning to death, but that is just the way it is. That is how the universe works. It is nature. To fear these things and see ...

Re: "Why secular Buddhism is Not True"

I think, if secular Buddhists want to be secular Buddhists let them be secular Buddhists. Rebirth means nothing in this life, other than as a motivator or an end goal. I don't understand why people always get hung up on it. "Monks, these two slander the Tathagata. Which two? He who explains what wa...

Re: Islamophobia - A nonsense term?

It's not about not being able to criticize Islam. Criticize away. It's about fearing all Muslims just because they are Muslims. The term was taken from Homophobia, which isn't a real phobia either. People just equate the term phobia with fear, and if by Islamophobia you mean an uneducated, all encom...

Re: Abortion poll

I think that Abortion is morally suspect, but it isn't my choice to make. It isn't my right to determine what women do with their bodies, ultimately, they are the ones that give birth and are expected to care for the child in most cases. If it is the killing of a living human being, aren't we oblig...
