Re: When you kill you are killing yourself?

From the Sangama Sutta: A man may plunder as long as it serves his ends, but when others are plundered, he who has plundered gets plundered in turn. A fool thinks, 'Now's my chance,' as long as his evil has yet to ripen. But when it ripens, the fool falls into pain. Killing, you gain your killer. Co...

Re: Can Saṅghānussati lead to jhana?

The following is from Thanissaros study guide linked above: §3. One thing — when developed & pursued — leads solely to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to stilling, to direct knowledge, to self-awakening, to Unbinding. Which one thing? Recollection of the Sangha. If it can lead all the w...

Re: Toxic Relationships

I just read this short reflection and feel it can offer you some guidance With your situation: Turning Inward With Patience Ajahn Jotipālo • July 2013 I have been listening to a few of Bhikkhu Bodhi’s talks on mettā, loving-kindness. He explained that in many practice situations, mettā can often be ...

Re: Dangers of Meditation

From Bhante Gunaratana: Everything is dangerous. Walk across the street and you may get hit by a bus. Take a shower and you could break your neck. Meditate and you will probably dredge up various nasty-matters from your past. The suppressed material that has been buried there for quite some time can...

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate

Sādhu indeed, Fronsdal's translation is apparently accurate but seemingly academic. It's better if you ask me to translate 'dhammā' as things or mental objects than phenomena. I sent Venerable Buddharakkhita's translation, from pariyatti, which gave it a more homegrown appeal. When amazon restocks ...

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate

I wanted to send out a copy of the dhammapada for its simplicity and concise nature, but the available translations I've looked at aren't as good as I'd like. The transformative power of Buddha word is greatly optimized with a good translation. I own a number of different translations and my favori...
