Re: Structuring lay life

The goal for householders should be stream entry. After all the Buddha said that there were literally hundreds of lay followers who were stream enterers who still were still partaking of sensuality: Is there a single a lay disciple, who wears white clothes, leads the holy life, while partaking sensu...

Re: Dumbbell Training

bodom, Is that you? Lookin' good! Hey David it sure is! When you come over for a Raiders game, they might mistake you for the Tight End! Lol those players would make me look like a little boy compared to them. At my strongest I benched pressed 300lbs at a weight of 170. Most of those guys are 220lb...

I built my physique using mainly dumbbells as I have a shoulder problem and barbells limited what I could do. I would be happy to give you a workout advice and diet plan.

Re: Stream Entry

How do I experience stream entry? I want to know what it will take to attain stream entry. I enjoy the increasing benefits of happiness the path brings in this life, but I would be very disappointed to find that I fall backwards either in this life or after this life. Please help. Re: Looking for a nice copy of the Jataka Tales.

I've been looking for the same-- this is the most complete printed collection I can find, but still doesn't include all the tales: https://store.pariyatti.org/Jataka-Tales-of-the-Buddha--3-Vol-Set_p_2591.html Look like a winner. Thanks for sharing. Income tax is coming Friday and I'm sticking up my...

Re: Advice for getting over being humiliated?

I've been exploring my feelings a bit, and I've just realized that a lot of my anger stems from feelings of humiliation. Other people were bad, insulting, etc. And I've never really recovered my full sense of pride since. I've just recently noticed this problem, and I'd like to move on from it. Can...

Re: Why Do Buddhism Sections in Libraries / Bookstores Omit the Suttas?

Every bookstore and library I've been to in San Antonio always has a copy of Bhikkhu Bodhi's classic anthology In the Buddhas Words. It's usually selling for around $15 dollars. His other translations in his series ranges from $50 to $100 and might not be cost effective for casual readers. I am grat...

Re: Why is Nirvana permanent?

It seems to me that the same applies to Nibbana. At its simplest, this just means the cessation of greed, hatred, and delusion. For the Buddha, or any arahant, these have ended. Tomorrow they will still be ended, and they always will be ended. So in this sense Nibbana is “permanent” – although this...

Re: Do the things i do in this life affect my family in my past lives?

There are two people in this world you can never can never really repay and that is your parents. The best you can do for them is to arouse and establish in them conviction, virtue, generosity and discernment. "I tell you, monks, there are two people who are not easy to repay. Which two? Your mother...

There, monks, I say there is surely no coming, no going, no persisting , no passing away, no rebirth. It is quite without support, unmoving, without an object,—just this is the end of suffering.” https://suttacentral.net/en/ud8.1 Feel free to add any further comments to this thread: Why is Nirvana ...

Re: Buying alive fishes to leave them in the river.

For the Buddha, love and compassion were incomplete if they were not extended to all sentient beings. He said that if a monk found an animal in a trap and out of compassion set it free, he would not be guilty of theft, even if conventional opinion considered the animal to be the property of the hun...

Re: Gautama a.k.a. Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

/.../ One can not abandon his family to ordain without permission. Were these rules about having to obtain permission made before or after the above-quoted discourse about Saṅgāmajī? The Udana ia considered to be one of the oldest books in the Khuddaka Nikaya. As we know the Vinaya was created and ...

Re: Gautama a.k.a. Buddha abandoning his wife and child - was it wrong?

The man who speaks to us from the suttas was wise, virtuous and compassionate. As I wrote in first line .. the given narrative has always upset me because it is difficult to reconcile the teacher from the suttas with someone who would leave his family in middle of the night. Well again and again it...

I'm sure someone here has a site for you but I do know a large majority of the commentaries have never been trans...
