Re: Dangers of Meditation

From Bhante Gunaratana: Everything is dangerous. Walk across the street and you may get hit by a bus. Take a shower and you could break your neck. Meditate and you will probably dredge up various nasty-matters from your past. The suppressed material that has been buried there for quite some time can...

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate

Sādhu indeed, Fronsdal's translation is apparently accurate but seemingly academic. It's better if you ask me to translate 'dhammā' as things or mental objects than phenomena. I sent Venerable Buddharakkhita's translation, from pariyatti, which gave it a more homegrown appeal. When amazon restocks ...

Re: Mailing a book to death row inmate

I wanted to send out a copy of the dhammapada for its simplicity and concise nature, but the available translations I've looked at aren't as good as I'd like. The transformative power of Buddha word is greatly optimized with a good translation. I own a number of different translations and my favori...

Re: Best books on Samatha Meditation

I would also like to add Thanissaro Bhikkhus meditation manual With Each and Every Breath which is probably the best over all guide to meditation I have read to date.

It can be read for free here:

Re: Best books on Samatha Meditation

All good recommendations above but I would also like to add Bhante Gunaratanas Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English: Countless people worldwide have made Mindfulness in Plain English a beloved and bestselling classic in almost a dozen languages. Now after nearly two decades, Bhante helps meditators o...

Re: Questions About the Thai Forest Tradtion

Thanks for the replies. Thanissaro gives a day-long talk on the Thai Forest Tradition that I would highly recommend. https://www.audiodharma.org/series/16/talk/5996/ Thank you for the link. So Thanissaro Bhikkhu teachers the same Meditation as Ajahn Lee Dhammadaro? How would this method differ from...

Re: How does one observe Anatta ?

The way I understand you have to observe all three (Anicca, Dukkha and Anatta) to realise Anatta. An excerpt from Bhikkhu Bodhi: When impermanence is seen, insight into the other two marks closely follows. Since the aggregates are constantly breaking up, we cannot pin our hopes on them for any last...
