Re: On so-called "Heart Practice"

...this mind doesn't give us a chance to allow an experience to come to us so that we can learn from it... So we make the effort to develop the patience and determination to just be with these difficult states of mind. ...We recognize the impatience, we watch it, and eventually it falls away. We do...

Re: 10 perfections?

In orthodox Theravada, AFAIK only the Buddha is fully complete in the Paramis. You don't actually find the 10 Paramis listed as such in the Pali Canon, however. I don't know what the origin of the idea is. RB They are found in the Buddhavamsa the fourteenth book in the Khuddaka Nikaya so technicall...

Re: On so-called "Heart Practice"

Sometimes just watching a hindrance is enough to overcome it. When your watching anger mindfully you are no longer fueling it with stories that will make it grow. This approach is pure satipatthana, right mindfulness. Other times just watching is not enough and you need to employ more active measure...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

Some people think that addicts are just normal people who have come under the spell of an addictive substance. I think that this is wrong and that thinking this will not lead to helpful advise for most addicts. Every year there are millions of people who take very addictive drugs in their treatment...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

You don't have to provide me with such an answer, but it would be nice if you would. You speak with great confidence, hence I assume you have an answer to my question (but for some reason refuse to reveal it). Having struggled with addiction and having gotten sober, yes, I can speak with confidence...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

No addict wants to stop using. They just want to be able to use there drug of choice without the consequences that go with it. That is the denial of the addict. That this time will be different. The belief that they will one day be able to use responsibly. This is the great delusion of every addict...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

I was under the impression that this thread is for those people who want to live a life free from the suffering of addiction and what they can do about it. How does one want to want to live a life free from the suffering of addiction? I think this is what many addicts are struggling with. No addict...

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

This seems to take for granted that life (any life) is worth living and that one must do everything in one's power to continue living. I was under the impression that this thread is for those people who want to live a life free from the suffering of addiction and what they can do about it. :namaste:

Re: A thought on advice about quitting addictions and bad habits

Unfortunately for an addict and alcoholic it is a life or death situation. There is no cutting back or reducing use. You either stop taking the chemicals that are causing problems in your life or you continue to make excuses why you can't stop and gradually lose everything. Recovery cannot begin unt...

Wouldn't that be bringing a child into an existence which is suffering?
Life is not suffering. Life contains suffering. It also contains much joy and happiness as well.

SN 51:20 identifies a “constricted” mind as one accompanied by sloth and drowsiness; a “scattered” mind as one stirred up by pleasing sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. “And how is desire inwardly constricted? Whatever desire is accompanied by sloth & drowsiness, conjoined with ...

The underlying cause is obvious, and clear. I lost my fancy house, and now I live in a ghetto. I have several pictures of my house, and I look at this pictures in tears. No, those are excuses why you continue to drink. It is ignorance and craving for your experience to be other than it is that is d...

Hi Bodom, i can see how to apply that when carrying out Point 4 and 5, but what about points 1,2 and 3? Would you have mindfulness completely grounded in the body when talking, working and interacting with people?
Of course. The body is always there wherever you go.

Re: Day to Day activities

The single most helpful thing I have found is to stay grounded in the body, to have mindfulness completely immersed in the body from head to toe. It is useful to have the body as an anchor to keep oneself from getting lost in thoughts and daydreams which takes one out of the present moment. :namaste:
