Re: Buddha is fake

I think fabianfred that we need to tailor our input to our likely audience, and folksy tales dont go down too well on Dhamma Wheel for the most part. Dont take it personally. And exactly what else is supposed to be put in a forum called "Dhammic Stories"? Is it so difficult for those who ...

Re: Treating Fleas?

It's best to remember that poisons don't limit their actions to solely those creatures we want gone. :anjali: Hello Mukunda, Could you tell me please, which of these solutions will kill other beings - and which other beings? Thanks for your input. The solutions in the link seem very safe. I was ref...

Re: Treating Fleas?

But if my dog somehow gets heartworms (yes, she's on preventatives of course, but they're not 100%), I will not flinch at protecting my dog from those heartworms. And if I get some sort of parasite, same decision. I'm not suggesting it's okay to kill in those instances or that the resulting vipaka ...

Re: Treating Fleas?

Where did the Buddha give exceptions to the 1st precept in regards to insects, or any other creature we may find inconvenient? :anjali: There is no reason to suppose the Buddha knew that mosquitoes were vectors for malaria. Having a small child running a high fever for days or weeks and with a stro...

Re: Treating Fleas?

I don't know what most of you are talking about. I just want to offer appreciation to Chris for this information. I am willing to use flea bombs, but both my doggy and myself break out in severe rashes afterwards. I will try these solutions. 5 Solutions for Natural Flea Control http://www.care2.com...

Re: Treating Fleas?

I haven't found any reasons in the suttas to believe we should not kill bugs. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/ud/ud.6.09.than.html Seems like a perfect opportunity to tell us all about why we should respect the lives of insects. But he didn't do it. Where did the Buddha give exceptions t...

Re: Are white lies acceptable?

A white lie is not always about the speakers best interest as they see it. What would you do if a Nazi officer asked you in 1942 if you had any little girls called Anne Frank in your attic ? Respond with "Why on earth would you think such a thing?" Of course, if he really did ask the ques...

Re: Are white lies acceptable?

I wonder if white lies are a form of attachment to rites and rituals, in this case 'social lubrication'. All too often, this is the case, and when we indulge in telling them, we reinforce delusion in ourselves and others. There seems to be an assumption that we MUST respond to every question put to...

Re: Prayer

As a former Vajrayana practitioner myself... I don't think I'm misreading that. "Former" implies you no longer practice. Willfully abandoning the practice is not in keeping with the Vajrayana vows. And leaving the Mahanyana for the Theravada (if this has happened) is not in keeping with t...

Re: Prayer

. PeterB...Thank you very much for your generous comments. Mukunda said : Actually, one with real understanding of Vajrayana would know that they don't just abandon the practice after being initiated into it, and one with a real understanding of Theravada would find no need for Vajrayana. Oh and yo...

Re: Prayer

Aloka frequently demonstrates knowledge of both Vajrayana and Theravada at depth level. She also manages to do so with a commendable evenness and positivity of tone. Would that more of us followed her example. Actually, one with real understanding of Vajrayana would know that they don't just abando...

Thanks Anicca. I just found the same sutta in my bhavana devotional book (which needless to say, has been closed and gathering dust for far too long). :embarassed:

Re: Prayer

I even know of native born Theravadins who pray to Saraswati, Ganesh, and other deities. When I asked them about it, they reminded me of a sutta (which I'm striving to find), where the Buddha instructed the devas to pay attention to and heed the prayers and offerings humans made to them. Hi Mukunda...

Re: What's the story behind your user name?

"Mukunda" is the dhamma name given to me when I took refuge and the precepts. Cool. What's the meaning of mukunda? It is derived from the word mukti, which means release from samsaric existence. The name Mukunda loosely translates to "one who shows the way to freedom". It was de...
