Re: It is not appropriate to term suffering as Noble truth of suffering

So it seem it is wrong to practice noting sensations and tag them no-self, suffering, impermanence. ...if we accept this teaching as authoritative. I know this is the "connections to other paths" subforum but I think determining whether or not there is in fact a connection is an integral part of th...

Re: Dana and debt

The kammic consequence of generosity & giving is wealth. No one has ever nor will ever become poor from giving. If you have debt you should give more. Even if you have just $100 you could give it all away & your debt will not be a bigger burden as a result, wealth will come to you. Through generosit...

Re: question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

I'm just wondering about the technical/historical/indic pronunciation...I understand places like Thailand & Myanmar do it their own way but I see that as divergent from pali & more reflective of their own language.

Re: question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

If you try to make a distinction by pronouncing every long vowel and short vowel with different pitch/sound, you'll find the technique breaks down and doesn't sound right in a lot of words. I don't think this is true, at least with regard to "sound" - I don't know what you mean about pitch as there...

question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

I know closed syllables (i.e. beginning & ending with consanant, e.g. sak in sakya) are long syllables in that they are twice the length of a short syllable. But is the vowel still pronounced as a short syllable? For example, in "sakyamuni" is the first "a" pronounced like "u" in "but" or "o" in "bo...

Re: What is the difference between Bhavanirodha and Vibhava?

kaccayanagotta sutta

vibhava is nonexistence which is a deluded extreme polar to existence

bhavanirodha is simply the ending of the delusion of existence, it's not the same as nonexistence

Best School for study of Theravāda/Early Buddhism & Pāḷi

So I dropped out of university awhile ago because the Theology & Religious Studies program was awful & I was accumulating a mass of debt. But I want to go back & finish a degree, I want to study pāḷi & perhaps Buddhist Studies, primarily w/r/t the early texts & history of early buddhism. I am curiou...

Re: uposatha days, what is your approach

You should do it on the proper day, & you should try your absolute best to not fail. You should relax & immerse yourself in Dhamma so as to not stray into negligence. You should also try to keep the 8 precepts as often as possible beyond the uposatha, but on uposatha you should certainly observe the...

Re: is birth control the same as getting an abortion

...in the vinaya i have heard its a parajika to dispense abortion or contraceptives... If your friend is not a monk/nun why would they care if they committed a parajika offence??? Contraceptive birth control is not the same as an abortion. How can wearing a condom be the same as abortion? And why d...
