Re: Evolution, Big Bang

You suggested that the Buddha declared what he "believed" but did not truly know & was actually false. This quote shows the impossibility of him doing such a thing. No, as the Buddha was the one who uttered the words, it merely shows his belief in the impossibility of such a thing. As I said earlie...

Re: Evolution, Big Bang

"...Are there in this venerable one any such ideas, whereby his mind being obsessed he might not knowing, say 'I know,' unseeing, say 'I see,' or to get others to do likewise, which would be long for their harm and suffering?" While thus testing him he comes to find that there are no such ideas in ...

"Monks, whatever in the cosmos — with its devas, Maras, & Brahmas, its generations with their contemplatives & brahmans royalty & common people — is seen, heard, sensed, cognized, attained, sought after, pondered by the intellect: That do I know. Re: Evolution, Big Bang

It might be the case that the Tathagata did not utter words which he knew to be unfactual. He might have uttered words which he believed to be factual, but which nevertheless were not in accordance with modern scientific knowledge. The Abhaya Sutta seems to be more about the Buddha's intentions tha...

Re: Evolution, Big Bang

I'm quite surprised by the responses thus far. [1] "In the case of words that the Tathagata knows to be unfactual , untrue, unbeneficial (or: not connected with the goal), unendearing & disagreeable to others, he does not say them. It might be the case that the Tathagata did not utter words which h...

Re: Evolution, Big Bang

Early Earth was covered in a global ocean and had no mountains There's lots of theories like this & they are becoming increasing common as the earliest date for life on earth has been pushed back to the very beginnings of its history. With regard to human history I think people need to keep in mind...

Re: It is not appropriate to term suffering as Noble truth of suffering

So it seem it is wrong to practice noting sensations and tag them no-self, suffering, impermanence. ...if we accept this teaching as authoritative. I know this is the "connections to other paths" subforum but I think determining whether or not there is in fact a connection is an integral part of th...

Re: Dana and debt

The kammic consequence of generosity & giving is wealth. No one has ever nor will ever become poor from giving. If you have debt you should give more. Even if you have just $100 you could give it all away & your debt will not be a bigger burden as a result, wealth will come to you. Through generosit...

Re: question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

I'm just wondering about the technical/historical/indic pronunciation...I understand places like Thailand & Myanmar do it their own way but I see that as divergent from pali & more reflective of their own language.

Re: question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

If you try to make a distinction by pronouncing every long vowel and short vowel with different pitch/sound, you'll find the technique breaks down and doesn't sound right in a lot of words. I don't think this is true, at least with regard to "sound" - I don't know what you mean about pitch as there...

question re: pronunciation of closed syllables

I know closed syllables (i.e. beginning & ending with consanant, e.g. sak in sakya) are long syllables in that they are twice the length of a short syllable. But is the vowel still pronounced as a short syllable? For example, in "sakyamuni" is the first "a" pronounced like "u" in "but" or "o" in "bo...

Re: What is the difference between Bhavanirodha and Vibhava?

kaccayanagotta sutta

vibhava is nonexistence which is a deluded extreme polar to existence

bhavanirodha is simply the ending of the delusion of existence, it's not the same as nonexistence
