Re: Was the Buddha attached to rites & rituals (silabbatupadana) ?

there is a distinction between attachment to rites/rituals & practical, detached utilization of them for a wholesome purpose generally speaking i think what the fetter refers to is the belief that rites & rituals are spiritually effective in & of themselves, like the water of the ganges purifying si...

Looking for sutta re: giving different types of teachings according to personality of audience

I remember a sutta where the Buddha lists I think 5 types of teachings to give & who to give/not give them to, something like "If I give a teaching on morality to someone unaccomplished in morality they will not receive it well", anyone know what it is?

Re: Nagarjuna wants Mahayanists to fear śrāvakas as one who loves life fears beheading

As already said elsewhere as Theravadin you should stay away from Nagarjuna's ideas because these are not compatible with Theravada doctrine. Actually for me it's weird that Zan call's himself an "orthodox Theravadin" and tries to merge his obviously private idea of "orthodox Theravada" with Nagarj...

Re: Gay and Buddhism

I'm a gay man. I'm not convinced that paṇḍaka doesn't simply refer to homosexual. The commentarial explanation is irrelevant, the commentary is very late & gets lots of things wrong. In the vinaya when the term is used the paṇḍaka in question is clearly a homosexual man. It might refer to a specific...

Greetings,

I assume you are referring to Pandakas? If so, it doesn't seem to simply mean "homosexual". For example, the men who slept with the monk were not classed as pandaka only the receptive monk was.
Having sex with a man isn't the same thing as being a homosexual.

Well they both share the same Indus Valley ancestry, if I remember correctly?
I agree with this but it's not the mainstream theory

The European Pagan Connection

Here I'll propose that the ancient Greek religion was genuinely aware of the basic structure of the universe & actual devas, with parallels between theirs & those acknowledged by the Buddha. In Buddhism Sakka is King of the Gods, ruler of a pantheon of 33. In the Hellenist religion Zeus is King of t...

Re: user on this forum with buddhanussati (itipiso...) in signature

Our member Kusala has: "He, the Blessed One, is indeed the Noble Lord, the Perfectly Enlightened One; He is impeccable in conduct and understanding, the Serene One, the Knower of the Worlds; He trains perfectly those who wish to be trained; he is Teacher of gods and men; he is Awake and Holy. " It'...

user on this forum with buddhanussati (itipiso...) in signature

I recently saw a translation of the buddhanussati/itipiso formula in someone's signature on this forum, I really liked the translation, I went back to try and find it but had no luck. Anyone know who it is?

Re: Canonical reference that arahants were/are doctors, firefighters, politicians, etc.?

Is there sutta support for requiring one to provide sutta support for every statement? Please provide it or stop requesting one. "Herein again a monk might say:... ...This is Dhamma, this is Vinaya, this is the Master's teaching.' Now the words of that monk, are neither to be welcomed nor scorned, ...

Re: Canonical reference that arahants were/are doctors, firefighters, politicians, etc.?

I thought the discourses and the texts were not written down for a long time after the Buddha's passing and certainly not during his life. How could the Buddha have been referring to them then? Sounds to me like a sect's legitimisation and deligitimisation of other sects devise added much later. he...

Re: Canonical reference that arahants were/are doctors, firefighters, politicians, etc.?

there's medical advice in the vinaya. brief political advice in the suttas. but arahants would never take up any sort of profession, other than monasticism.
