Re: How come all the Theravada Countries so under-develop?

Hi all, I guess its true what you all say. By the way I didn't mean to make it sound that Buddhism should be the gold standard in each country. I think spiritual goals are pretty similar regardless of brand - all want peace, respect, enlightenment albeit in different ways. And they find their way in...

Re: What is holding you back from ordaining?

This is just my understanding of why he left, I might be wrong: After seeing the realities of aging, sickness and death which apply to all beings the Buddha-to-be had a strong sense of urgency to find the way out of suffering. Hello Guy, yes this is precisely why I would ordain. Not to rediscover b...

Re: What is holding you back from ordaining?

Thanks Guy, One of the things I've had trouble explaining to my non-Buddhist friends is in what way was Gotama kind and compassionate when he walked out from his wife and child. I'm still uncertain if he had the permission of his parents and wife when he did. Quite frankly, my leaving my family woul...

Re: What is holding you back from ordaining?

Sometimes when I think about ordaining or even a life of solitude, I think about this: Am I running towards something? Or am I running away from something? It can be discomforting if you come from a culture that tells you to strand straight and fight like a man, and you're called a chicken for walki...

Re: How come all the Theravada Countries so under-develop?

look at sizes and population densities. Europe as a whole has only had what, a 40 year period of continuous peace in the last 2000+ years? there are riots in Europe all the time, just turn on the news. "uprisings, militarism, cruel monarchs and gross violations of human rights" um Spain, ...

Re: How come all the Theravada Countries so under-develop?

Hello Wind, You asked the same question I asked in the now defunct community that is Buddhist Community about the state of Buddhist- majority countries. I think its is a good question. Thanks for asking it here. We all learn by asking questions. My question then was more on why lands of the enlighte...

Re: Taking the plunge

You have my utmost admiration Jack. May you find what you are looking for in Sri lanka.

I too am "plotting" my getaway, targeting within 2 years although my leaving-home path would probably take me to Thailand and the UK before hitting India or Sri Lanka.

Re: What is holding you back from ordaining?

I've let go of the last of my earthly posessions last year... my car and house, and I've cleared off all my debts. I have neither wife nor children. The only thing that's holding me back now is my parents. I work so they could live.

My wish is when I pass on, I will be wearing saffron robes.

Re: How come all the Theravada Countries so under-develop?

Is it a coincidence that all the Theravada Buddhist Countries (Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka) are so under-develop? Countries need not be Mahayana or Theravada to be underdeveloped. Try the African continent. Your statement would be true if you compared those countries to Western count...

Re: Buddhism based on fear/hope?

Hi all, The Dalai Lama has defined a Buddhist as "one who, motivated by fear of suffering in the lower realms, takes refuge in the Triple Jewels" (my paraphrase...I don't have the specific passage in front of me just now). Elsewhere, he writes "to take refuge, two conditions must be ...

Re: Millionaire gave away his wealth.

Perhaps this is a good place to repeat the question I posed in this thread which had no replies to date. Greetings, I have a question about this sutta, extracted from AN 7.49, regarding the topic of generosity . When the Buddha was speaking with Sariputta about the motives and fruits of giving, he s...

That's great. For some odd reason my Android phone doesn't seem to recognize Bhikkhu Samahita's RSS feed so you've given me a good reason to sign up. Thanks!

Re: Theravadin Resource guide

Hi friends, I found the link for the Daily Dhamma E-mail at this site (I presume it is the one operated by Bhikku Samahita), except that it is not an email facility. It is an RSS feed which is updated daily. It is as good as an e-mail feed. To receive the daily dhamma drop click here to get the feed...
