Re: Word buddha: a direct meaning or a metaphor?

For example, what is "valley god" in taodejing, is it better to have a guess at its meaning or labelled it as a metaphor? If I say "the body is a prison," it is not that I mean a literal prison, or that I don't understand what a body or a prison are. I am creating a new relation, and that relation,...

Re: Word buddha: a direct meaning or a metaphor?

The first time I came across the word metaphor was in the book by Dr Gombrich. I was very impressed at that time. However, later I realised by saying this and that is a metaphor... It dun mean anything. A smile made more sense. Has the Buddha use any metaphor? Some said he borrowed terms from Bramin...

Re: Word buddha: a direct meaning or a metaphor?

The metaphor concept is a western invention in Buddhism. A word in original recorded language to a native at the same era will mean what it is. Why will it need to be a symbolic or outside of its normal meaning? At most it can be called a translation mismatch or a difference in meaning due to cultur...

I get asked this a lot and I’ve never really found a satisfactory answer to give, but I thought I’d try it again. Why is it an Arahant continues on eating, sleeping, walking and teaching others if they are free from the world?
Their old karma is still on going.

Re: Not Identifying with Form or Not Conceiving Form?

How about someone who have actual experience of this? Not fully mastered this but on and off actually experience this. From that, compare it with the description and try to describe it and compare with the text description?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Noble_Truths

Check out the part on "appearance in the suttas".

Another way is to use the index page of the nikaya and look for "4 noble truths", there are longer and shorter versions.

Re: Becoming in DO

I used to interpret DO as a momentary but multi interface (dependant on concentration level) model. But i guess on theory level, it should cover the transmigration of consciousness to a new support system when the old one aged and failed. I just happened to read in another forum where gandhabbas was...
