Where is a good place to leave comments? If you register, you can participate in the discussion of the lectures as they are given. Otherwise, of course, you could make comments here. Mike Participating in the discussion there is highly encouraged, and substantial questions and connections r...

Re: What is self ? What is soul ?

I want to link an interesting article on this topic. Not wanting to derail the thread with polemics, but the interesting part to me is the discussion of how the English terms "self" and "consciousness" were neologisms invented by a particular person--John Locke. They never existed before and people ...

Re: Who are well-respected teachers in southern California aside from Thanissaro Bhikkhu, of any lineage?

I'm also interested in this question for Theravada in particular. For Zen, a Zen practitioner that I respect recommended this center founded by Master Seung Sahn: http://www.dharmazen.com/index.htm I don't have any experience with it though. Edit: I guess since I just dropped off my son there for a ...

Re: Is postmodernism "a product of sheer stupidity" according to Buddhism ?

More than that, Buddha claimed he does posses information that was not obtained through mere reasoning, but through long contemplation and reduction of hidrances (witch weaken wisdom), through "developing a higher mind". Yes, this is what I wanted to say. It is straightforward in the first sutta yo...

Re: Is postmodernism "a product of sheer stupidity" according to Buddhism ?

I read through the whole thread, but I'm confused what it's talking about and what it has to do with Buddhism. I started to write an explanation of Postmodernism but it got long... 1. Postmodernism was first of all a movement in art and architecture in the late 20th century. Some of its signature fe...

Re: "Appearance and Existence" by Ven. Ninoslav Ñāṇamoli

Thank you so much for your response. And sorry it took so long to follow up. In short, I think he is saying that through conceiving the appearance there is existence, i.e. the appropriation of the appearance. The only other thing I would say – to stay in line with the terminology (as much as to get ...

Re: The teachings of Ven. Waharaka Abhayaratanalankara Thero

We are going around in loops without addressing the root issue. Yes, as you say transliteration appears to be the root issue. in the the case of attā and atthaṃ the source of error appears to be: (1) the absence of the aspirated consonant [t̪ʰ] in the modern Sinhala phonemic system, which leads Sin...

Re: "Appearance and Existence" by Ven. Ninoslav Ñāṇamoli

I am very late to this and just came upon the thread. I am amazed by this article, what little I can glean from it. I tried to follow the discussion in the thread but a lot of that escaped me too. If anyone is still following this, I wonder if you could help with just the basic outline of the articl...

Re: Courage in the face of versatility and supremacism regarding the Dharma?

After SDC's thought-provoking comments I don't really have anything to add to the discussion. But you have asked me some questions and I will answer. How come you mention mudita in this context? In general, like I mentioned brahma viharas already, to take the mind away from the ego and the circulari...

Re: Courage in the face of versatility and supremacism regarding the Dharma?

"Philosophizing" has a very bad reputation. But I don't think that talking a lot automatically constitutes "philosophizing". Here at the forums, it is simply because of the medium that one has to say a lot to get a point across. You're right, I shouldn't have used a term with a negative connotation...

Re: Ways to reach enlightenment according to the suttas

The Venerable Ānanda's discourse to a man from Atthakanagara enumerates eleven ways to liberation. This sutta is so interesting. "Then again, a monk keeps pervading the first direction[2] with an awareness imbued with good will, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth. Thus abo...

Re: Courage in the face of versatility and supremacism regarding the Dharma?

This is something I have struggled with too. Do you believe that it is possible for a human being to drastically and radically decrease their suffering and stress? If not, then that’s fine. Buddhists aren’t out there knocking on doors to prostelytize. If so, then you will want to try things to see w...

Re: Anapana Redux

The Sutta is Buddha's word. What you experience cannot be reliably confirmed unless you reflect back on the Suttas. Hi, in that case, would you be able to expand on how the suttas support this interpretation? I have been very intrigued by the puredhamma site since it was referenced on here a couple...
