Taking Root in North America

Greetings all,

This is a two part question:

1. What are the criteria for determining whether or not Buddhism has taken root in a country?

2. Has Theravada Buddhism fully taken root in North America, or is there still work to be done?

Thank you.

Re: Various Books on Buddhism

Thank you, tilt, for the book recommendations and for letting me know that most of those books aren't up to date. :anjali:

Re: Various Books on Buddhism

Venerable Pesala, Thank you for responding. I have plenty of books on the basics of the Dhamma. With the list of books that I posted, I am trying to learn all I can about the history of Buddhism in India, learn more about the different sects/schools of Buddhism that exist both in the past and curren...

Various Books on Buddhism

Greetings all, The list below is comprised of books I found on a Web store in India. I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of or read any of them? Are there any to definitely avoid? I know it's a rather long list, but I want any feedback that I can get. Thank you all for any help you can pro...

Re: God Particle

Kim,

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm very scientifically inept (I think that's the right word?). A lot of it is over my head. I didn't do very well in science and math classes in school.

Re: My girlfriend

Good advice from everyone, here. I know with me, personally, relationships only complicate my life and affect my practice of Dhamma in a negative fashion. I agree with the previous poster that said solitude is best for Dhamma practice. However, I understand that isn't possible for everyone. I, too, ...

Re: God Particle

Thanks for making this post, tilt. I've been wondering about this discovery. I like Alex's possible explanation of why it's called the "God particle". Makes sense to me.

That image was pretty funny, Ben...

Re: Thai "Buddhist" pendant

There are a lot of fake amulets out there. You really need to either buy them for a reputable dealer or directly from a temple. You can easily get ripped off. You should ask whoever gave it to you at what temple and what city they got it in. If they can't provide this information, well...I don't kno...

Re: Forest Sangha Publications

Would anyone know why I get a question mark (?) in some Pali words when I read the ePubs in Adobe Digital Editions? How can I fix this?

Thanks.

Re: Could someone please explain this rule?

Alan, I don't mean any disrespect, but you seem to have such high disregard for rules, what do you think of the Five Precepts? I, for one, see all the rules as valid. Don't ask me to explain it, it's just how I feel. Also, as far as removing the minor rules that the Buddha said could be removed, I t...

Re: English Translations

Buckwheat, No, I haven't run out of material, far from it. I just was wondering because I thought maybe it could of benefit to people (including myself, someday) that read English better than other languages. What sparked the interest in this was a program I have of the Tipitaka all in romanized scr...

Re: English Translations

Well, let me put it this way. I believe both are possible. Or, I assume it would be considering the Mishnah, Talmuds (both Jerusalem and Babylonian), Midrash, commentaries on Torah/Tanach (Jewish Bible), etc. were all translated from the original Hebrew into various languages and subsequently publis...

Re: Could someone please explain this rule?

I have Thanissaro Bhikkhu's "Buddhist Monastic Code" in hard copy. I haven't started reading it yet. The smaller volume I have on the same subject didn't mention anything about this. But, Ajahn Thanissaro's book (it's actuallly two volumes) is online in PDF format. You might be able to fin...
