Re: Darwin and the Buddha

There are some similarities, but the bigger differences seem to be ignored. Probably you are right, and comparing the two seems like a stretch. I agree on the fact that both thinkers believe life is fundamentally a struggle, and I found this interesting in the sense that it shows how far-fetching t...

Re: Nihilism has poisoned modern society; as Buddhists, we should reject it.

The problem the west has is, that is the world morality is equated with judeo-christian judgement and has really negative connotations. So we have to re-frame what morality means and how we talk about it. Not an easy task when the word has been owned by those religions for so long. :goodpost: The i...

Re: Why are you in this forum?

I chose #9 because I see this forum as an opportunity to learn from more experienced members and to share my experience, concerns and successes in the path.
Not having a physical sanga close by, I regard this forum as my virtual sanga. :)

Re: is the 5th precept seen as "optional" by some?

I've just finished reading this thread, and i found it so inspiring I had to post a reply, even though the OP is quite old. I am currently trying to keep the 5th precept (the hardest one for me, together with stopping idle chatter and gossip!), and find it quite hard when there's peer pressure. Howe...

Re: Seeking suggestions for a trip to Hong Kong

Hi everyone, I just wanted to report back on my trip. It was really amazing, and I visited many Buddhist temples including Lantau Big Buddha, Chi Lin Nunnery, 10,000 Buddhas and Western Monastery. They were all very impressive, but the Big Buddha was a bit too much of a tourist attraction for my tas...

I would also recommend tofu (豆腐 doufu). It s easier to digest than beans, it's usually cheaper than veggie burgers and the like, and it can be prepared in a thousand different ways.

Re: Seeking suggestions for a trip to Hong Kong

If you are a fan of Hong Kong movies, 10,000 Buddhas has a cameo in Infernal Affairs (remade by Scorsese as The Departed). The Chinese title refers to Avici Hell, hence "Infernal"... A big budget movie with several superstars and beautiful panoramas from rooftops. I actually LOVE  ...

Seeking suggestions for a trip to Hong Kong

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right place to post this. In December I will be travelling to Hong Kong for a couple of weeks. I know Hong Kong is not a Theravada place, and that actually HK Buddhism is inextricably linked to Daoism and other local customs. However, I am still very excited to vis...

Re: DhammaWheel Public Library Challenge: The Social Harmony Edition

Are there any plans to translate the book into other languages?

Unfortunately our local library would only (or mainly) purchase books in Italian as not many people can read English proficiently here.
