Re: Is the Buddha's teaching a form of conservatism?
P.A.Payutto's text "A Constitituion For Living" contains certain extracts that pertain to the roles of governance... here's some that may be of interest. This scholar is an excellent reference for Dhamma-friendly takes on societal issues. Thank you for the digging. I'd be interested in ho...

Re: Is the Dhamma a form of conservatism?
One might wonder though why the Buddha spoke up against... the caste system... Please provide some sutta quotes to support his view. Thanks I suggest you do the digging. It's not difficult. but not against slavery? Please provide some sutta quotes to support his view that the Buddha approved of sla...

Re: Convertion of muslims
As for 'tolerance', this is contrary to the five precepts. 'Tolerance' is a practise for individual reformation or liberation but not really a political value. Society does not 'tolerate' murderers, thieves, rapists, drug dealers & other criminals. We are talking about tolerating people with di...

Re: Is the Dhamma a form of conservatism?
In my opinion, the Dhamma will seek to retain elements of the culture that are conducive to liberation, which can be seen as a conservative attitude while using the already existing culture to introduce new elements that are essential or sometimes simply useful for liberation. One might wonder thoug...

Is the Buddha's teaching a form of conservatism?
What do you guys think?DooDoot wrote:Buddhism ... as a path of practise is obviously 'conservative'. Five, eight, ten, 227 precepts and 10 or 37 wholesome kammas are obviously 'conservative'. Funny & strange the things Western Buddhists are cheer-leading for these days.

Re: Convertion of muslims
Wasn't it your good self that recently wrote elsewhere that you & others appreciate a core & stable culture? I don't think so. That doesn't sound like something I would write at all. Can you quote me saying so? I think it is religious or moral values (rather than race or superficial identit...

Re: Convertion of muslims
In his documentary Hypernormalisation , Adam Curtis explains how the use of Muslim faith to radicalize and then use people as landmine fodder or kamikazes which is fueling islamophobia arose some time in the 70s. It is a trite, but regarding the topic of this thread, religious freedom is an importan...

Re: Convertion of muslims
This is the situation in Malaysia. I think I still wouldn't advertise it if I were to give up the faith I am all for not agitating for conflicts and antagonisms but that doesn't mean we should not see the reality for what it is when investigating it http://media.themalaymailonline.com/uploads/articl...

In Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and Yemen apostasy is punishable by death sentence. There are certainly cases of people outside these countries getting murdered for having left the religion as well. He...

Re: Ahara Sutta: Food
I think the idea is for the practitioner themselves to find out what those phenomena are for him/herself, and to avoid them. What you are describing here looks very much like burying one's head in the sand. That is probably better than applying inappropriate attention to doubt-inducing matters, but...

It would be good if there existed a way to drive them out without purposefully killing them. Any chemical product that could send them away? According to Ajahn Thanissaro, if you are trying to achieve a given outcome and some bugs are unintentionally killed in the process, it is not a breach of prec...

self-help.jpg Actually a lot of the practice is exactly like this "This body, sister, comes into being through food. And yet it is by relying on food that food is to be abandoned. "This body comes into being through craving. And yet it is by relying on craving that craving is to be abando...
