Re: Diversity among mods

Certainly, if that person were an academic or if they were basing their appeals upon contemporary academic Buddhology. But if I could offer a point-counter-point: perspectives rooted in EBT studies, however right or wrong, are perspectives rooted in the academy, specifically the academy of textual ...

Re: Diversity among mods

We don't actually know that the Venerable Śāriputra did not transmit definitive Abhidhamma clarifications of suttanta. Anyone who tells you otherwise in an absolutist manner is not being academically honest. Possibly; and then conversely: We don't actually know that the Venerable Śāriputra did tran...

Re: Diversity among mods

I think that misappropriated hermeneutics inspired by EBT studies has always been something of an aggressive mainstream here, at least since I joined the forum. Casual offhand comments about Abhidhamma & Mahāṭṭhakathā abound. I myself am guilty of this as well. We don't actually know that the Venera...

Re: Diversity among mods

This is a completely bogus argument against diversity, the reason diversity is so important is that each race and gender has certain positive and otherwise attributes that they can bring to the table that a member of another race or gender might not even be aware of, its not about equality, its abo...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

DDJ I , English rendering by John H. C. Wu: 道可道,非常道。名可名,非常名。 Tao can be talked about, but not the Eternal Tao. Names can be named, but not the Eternal Name. 無名天地之始;有名萬物之母。 As the origin of heaven-and-earth, it is nameless: As "the Mother" of all things, it is nameable. 故常無欲,以觀其妙;常有欲,以觀其徼。 So, as eve...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

In reading the tao te ching I think that referring to commentaries too much tends to blunt the meaning Certainly, an over-reliance on the perceived authority of commentary might as well be blind faith in an infallible teacher. But it seems to me most translations of the Dàodéjīng one will encounter...

Are you of the opinion that cittakkhana in accordance with Theravāda Abhidhamma are discreet temporal units? Or are they a conceptual framework for stressing moment-to-moment (in a general sense, as in "any given frame of time") general impermanence?

Re: Avijja translated as "Insentience"

Thanks James, What you write makes sense to me, but I am still confused about the translation of avijja as insentience...It sounds like 'insentience' (cessation of perception and feeling) is what stops DO?? But in DO, avijja is the cause for the arising of subsequent links. Any thoughts? Does Ven B...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

Daoism is much more poetic (and therefore confusing, to me at least), which I feel is reflected here. IMO translations of Daoist scripture are poetic and confusing. I am reading the Tao Te Ching with the comments of each verse. Whose commentary, if you don't mind me asking? I would suggest this one...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

a dream is not a perception of the world. a perception is not a dream. there is an easy one : a perception comes from a sense, a sense is awaken by a material contact (exterior->interior). if one cannot make this distinction, then he cannot understand dhamma. Consider: "exterior->interior" --> "adh...

Re: Zhuangzi and the Butterfly

At that stage and beyond, words will not be applicable to describe something that in reality keep changing. Language is a very fixed coding. From the same text quoted in the OP: 荃者所以在魚, A fish trap is used, therefore there are fish, 得魚而忘荃。 there are fish and forgotten is the fish trap. 蹄者所以在兔, A ra...

Re: Diversity among mods

maybe DW needs some diversity This is a scary trigger word for many people: diversity. How so? Some time I will innocently work the word "diversity" into a post in a specific way, just the word itself, completely innocuously and apolitically, then I will PM you. We will see how many people are trig...

Daoism is much more poetic (and therefore confusing, to me at least), which I feel is reflected here. IMO translations of Daoist scripture are poetic and confusing.
