Re: PreBirth Experience (PBE),Remembering Birth,Past Lives

Some people having near death experience report beings made of light coming to "guide them" across - I think that sometimes they recognize these beings as departed family members, or as Jesus/Bodhisattva etc...I think the critical point is that kamma is what is creating the major part of our experie...

Re: Thought Experiment

I used to think about this quite a bit: "What do I actually know!?" - because I desperately wanted to ensure that my choices in life were informed by some kind of actual truth, at least to some extent. I ended up landing on the fact that I would die - I could know this to be absolutely true, regardl...

Re: Does practice the eight precept alone can lead to liberation ?

I think maybe believing that the eight precepts alone could lead you to liberation could be considered 'clinging to rites and rituals' (silabataparamasa) -
but observance of the precepts couldn't hurt

Re: Self is an Illusion

I don't think Sam Harris has arrived at this view completely independently of Buddhism - Harris is a meditator and has participated in Goenka retreats and so forth. I believe he is fairly well versed in Pali Buddhism, as well as Dzogchen. Granted, he is looking at things more from a certain philisop...

Re: Are Raga, Dosa and moha in paralale to Anicca, Dukkha, Anatta?

I've never considered this possibility but it seems interesting. Like you said, raga seems to be associated with failing to consider that pleasant sense objects and the gratification derived from them are totally impermanent. Dosa is our unskillful response to painful feeling/sickness/aging/death/su...

I can tell you the names of all of these monks. The one at the back far left is Puriso Bhikkhu (myself), who left the robes in 1992
Hi Puriso,

I am curious - what you are up to now? Are you practicing and/or teaching Dhamma?

Thank you,

Brad

It would be fun if someone can explain more about the laws what one not are allowed to do tel me every law you know. 5 Precepts: -Abstain from killing living beings -Abstain from taking what is not given (theft) -Abstain from sexual misconduct (adultery, sexual exploitation/abuse etc...) -Abstain f...

Re: HH Dalai Lama

Really? Where? The suttas often refer to the five strands of sensual pleasures rather than the five strands of sensory experience. I think you need to provide some sutta support for the claims above. I don't feel the need to provide sutta support in this case - I think it is conventional to speak o...

Re: HH Dalai Lama

"Our consciousness" or the "element of consciousness"? The Pali scriptures appear to instruct to examine "consciousness" and to abandon the idea of "our consciousness", as follows: True, but to be fair, the Pali scriptures also seem to suggest that it is sometimes appropriate to use common terminol...

Re: Why do we have resentment towards the people are very close to us?

Aversion/Ill-Will. It is a sad thing. We want things and people to be a certain way and they aren't, so we blame them and get upset, and we suffer. I think this happens with those closest to us precisely because they are closest to us. That is to say, we interact with them regularly - so it make sen...

Re: Third Eye Meditation

Maybe it could be a "nimitta"? - a sign of the mind becoming more still...You might look up Ajahn Brahm's teachings on this (how to cultivate it and use it to enter samadhi), and I believe it is also mentioned in the VisudhiMagga. Of course, there is also the divine eye (Dibba Chaku) which the Araha...
