Re: Avijja translated as "Insentience"

Thanks James,

What you write makes sense to me, but I am still confused about the translation of avijja as insentience...It sounds like 'insentience' (cessation of perception and feeling) is what stops DO?? But in DO, avijja is the cause for the arising of subsequent links.

Any thoughts?

Re: lay people should still try

I am finding it nearly impossible at times to practice in a full house. When I was living alone, at least I could make some modest progress in meditation. It even feels like people (my own family members) are demonically trying to throw me off from my practice. Lay life is for the birds!!

Ok,

I'm not really interested in fruitless online confrontations, and I honestly am not sure I understand what it is you're trying to express to me. I apologize if my comment offended you in some way.

Be well.

Re: What is my ancestry? who cares.

I had my maternal grandpa and dad do a DNA test last year. We found out a few new things about the family on both sides. I don't think this is all that helpful in practice, but I do think this kind of investigation might lead to a greater appreciation for the preciousness of your human birth, albeit...

May benevolent Devas rejoice and share in all of our merits, and may they protect us and help us to succeed in our lives and in our practice. I have no problem whatsoever mentally reciting this kind of "prayer", and I don't think anyone else should either! :) If one sees reciting this prayer as bei...

Re: Mental ilness, causes and apaya realms

Hi guys, Mental illness is not uncommon in modern society, from mild to severe illness. Depression, (generalized) anxiety disorder, panic disorder and schizophrenia, to name a few. Do people with (long-term) mental illness are "destined" to be reborn in one of lower realms or they're just illness r...

I failed, it's game over. I give up the fight against Mara. This demon is invincible. I go to samsara, in my next life I will succeed. wrong choice my friend!!!! Take it one day at a time. Re: Worldly success & Dhamma practice

The problem I think is not so much with "success" (however you define that) as it is with the way that 'praise, honor, and gain' can obsess the mind and lead to unwholesome things (breaking precepts and so forth). So for myself, I think the real challenge for the lay Buddhist who is involved in secu...

Very interesting! Sometimes it's hard to comprehend time as a human.
Yes and I wonder do beings in different realms experience time the same way we do. I suspect not. Time is relative.

But the whole idea of stream-entry (or any noble attainment) is that you never fall back from it, even if you do get reborn. You never have to re-enter the stream, so to speak...

Re: Nobility of the Bodhisatta

Was the Bodhisatta born on earth as a stream enterer (or higher) ?? Why, or why not? Is there any canonical support one way or the other?? The only sutta support I am aware of for this idea is MN 123 . If MN 123 is authentic, it would not only contradict MN 64 but it shows young Bodhisatta already ...

Re: Love, A contemplation

Isn't there a sutta somewhere in which a Gandhabbha or Yakkha composed and sang some verses on "Arahants and Love" ( romantic love! ), and didn't the Buddha compliment him on this?

Congratulations and may you two enjoy much happiness together!

Re: Nobility of the Bodhisatta

This sounds trivial I guess but I think it is substantial.....the buddha was born as a baby and it seems that a baby doesnot have the faculties developed to the point to be a noble one....so....seems it had to develop over time as the baby developed unless you believe that sutta which says that the...

As I'm sure you know, CG Jung had some interesting things to say about this. Jung: Synchronicity Personally, I am convinced that these things are real (not mere coincidences, although these also do exist ). For me, I use such experiences to bolster my faith in the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha, and to ...

Re: Nobility of the Bodhisatta

Thanks for the suggestion/link, Paul. I will definitely look at the book.

Your assessment seems sound. However, I recall having heard a Bhikkhu suggest that the Bodhisatta was born as a Once Returner (if I remember correctly).

Nobility of the Bodhisatta

Greetings Everyone, I have searched for an answer to this question before, but never found anything of substance, so I thought I would try here: Was the Bodhisatta born on earth as a stream enterer (or higher) ?? Why, or why not? Is there any canonical support one way or the other?? Thank you, Brad

Re: Greed and karma

When talking about kamma, it is important to emphasise the role played by intention in affecting the result of action. This may be true, however, within the sphere of morality ( sila ), namely, how kamma (actions) affect others, the mental kamma is not so relevant & a mental asava is itself not yet...

It appears that doubt is fully eliminated only by attaining Anagami.
Can you elaborate a bit? I don't think I am following the logic 100% here.
